I've lived in Guangdong province for many years and had never heard of this place until a student alerted me to it. It should be much better known. Not quite up there with Kew, Singapore or Hamilton, NZ, but a very large and interesting collection none-the-less.
In the humid summer conditions it is well worth the 10 yuan extra for the electric car to get an orientation to the extensive gardens. You would need 2-3 hours to walk around but can get a few nice photos in 1-2 hours.

We spent a weekend near the Guangzhou Science City, so decided to visit some greenery in the vicinity (15 mins radius).

This Botonical Garden is said to be the 2nd largest one in China, indeed no joke. You may want to consider renting a bike inside, better if you can bring your own along.

The park is not fancy, but does have a nice collection of different plantations. Strolling through the pathways of various theme is quite nice. Beware to wear your mosquito repellent.

If you plan to visit more than once in a month, you may want to bring along a personal photo and get a monthly pass, which is just RMB 15 more than a single entry ticket, quite worth it.

You may also want to check the blooming seasons of different flowers when planning a trip over there.

This is a very large complex, which would could easily take a whole day to cover. If you like interesting plants and exotic flowers, it's worth the trip. It's not as nice as others I have seen, but pretty good for China. The main greenhouse is huge, with fun elevated walkways, waterfalls, and an elevator. The polar and alpine greenhouse was a nice relief on a 35Celsius day.

The park has a small (somewhat rundown) amusement park at the far end, which my son enjoyed very much. They rent bikes there to run around the expansive grounds.

My guess is that a Spring visit would be ideal, but a visit in summer was OK too, since it was cooler in the trees.

I took the driving test and get there, it's just a regular botanical garden, but you can enjoy it with your friends and peers as outdoor activity. Also, enjoy the natural Oxygen bar there.
