I have stayed in various 5 star hotels in China over the years and the Grand Hyatt Guangzhou was by far my favorite. Service was good--English was not perfect and there was little frustrations with some staff members who cannot articulate themselves. The Chinese way of communication is sometimes to confound a person until they leave or agree. However, the staff in general tried hard, which is more than I can say for other Chinese hotels.
Breakfast was great, with an ample selection of foods although you could get your fitness in walking to the various stations, which are quite far from end to end.
I have to note that the quality of the food was excellent, not just at breakfast, but at the restaurant and room service as well. Breakfast was included, however if it was not it would have costed around 30-40 USD. Lunch and dinner are also served buffet style in the same restaurant as breakfast and the food looked top notch as well. We had a la carte for lunch as I did not feel able to eat that much food.
The rooms were spacious and had lovely furnishings. The only minor complaint I have is with the bathroom layout; there are about three different ways you can enter into the bathroom area. There are two sinks, but neither are very convenient for every day tasks. I must confess in a morning daze, I walked into the shower a few times to get to the bedroom area. The view I had was of a half-developed building, which seems to be the case of much of China. The noise level was minimal, if at all noticeable however, and I did not go there for the view.
I had a great price with the company I booked with, however I know that the normal room rate is quite costly. However, the quality, service, and luxury of the hotel are quite deserving.
To note: if you go out of the hotel make a left and just down the block there is a mall on your right (the entrance is the first crosswalk underneath the bridge). There is a supermarket on the lower floor, which also has small eateries, including McDonalds and Starbucks. On the 4th and 5th floor are proper restaurants, I would suggest the dim sum place on the 5th floor which had great "xiao long bao" (little buns with soup inside).
