Having traveled to (and through) the Far East on business several times per year for nearly 15 years, I expect a sort of pace to upper end, international brand, business friendly hotels. There's the architecture (China has been a sort of crazy architects dream for the past 10 years...Google "China" and "Architecture" and you'll see to what I refer). Externally, it needs to stand out without being a spectacle. The interior needs to be able to show up in high end glossy magazines without being cold and soulless (I'm going to be sleeping there, after all!). The F&B outlets need to meet the demands of basic nutrition for the global traveler (rule #1 of travel, take care of your digestive system) and appeal to the foodie that most of us harbor. There needs to be a fitness center and spa and the location needs to be at least reasonably close to mass transit (mostly to avoid the additional costs of getting to the transit hubs). The rooms need to handle sleeping, entertaining, studying, working, and basic relaxing. When you travel halfway around the globe for a few weeks, your hotel room needs to be something worthy of coming "home" to at the end of the day. It is not, you're not going to be able to recharge.
Grand Hyatt Guangzhou meets each requirement. Some better than others. The rooms feel smaller than other hotels in its market segment. The bathtub in the standard room is small square that is not really large enough for someone of average or larger Western male size to relax in...but the rain shower area more than compensates. The standard buffet restaurant is probably the best of its kind in any of the this class of hotel in the area. The fitness center is typical "executive gym" style (translation: if you're a serious gym rat, you're going to have to be very creative if you want a serious resistance workout) but the pool area excels and has the largest hot tub that I've seen in the region.
What sets this property apart is the staff. Whether at the ground level attendant/greeting station, at the lobby level/front desk areas, the concierge or the Grand Club, the staff is at the top of the game. I can go months at a time between stays here and the moment I walk off the elevator, there is a minimal time before I am called by my name by someone who I recognize...and while this is also standard customer engagement in this market, there is something extra about how this happens at the Grand Hyatt. There is a warmth that exceeds the norm that is, at the same time, not at all pushy or uncomfortable.
Given the hotel construction boom that continues in Southern China, there will be, for some time, newer and newer hotels for the Grand Hyatt to compete against. There will be larger and more comfortable rooms, for example. But this hotel sets such a high standard for personal service that I can't imagine a situation in which I will not look forward to returning here.
