It it old and falling apart, the restaurant is non functioning, the breakfast isn't restocked so you better get there first, the bed is uncomfortable, it's nowhere near downtown, and worse of all it's an Asian party house with screaming and banging all night every night. DO NOT GO HERE.

English speaking staff. Bad breakfast (at least for western expectations). The staff was very nice and helpful. They also allowed us to check in a little earlier. It is not exactly at the city center but it is not far though. A 15-20 minute walk will take there. A few minutes from the information center and the city market, where you can take a bus to lake Baikal.

3-star hotel that offers good value. The location is great to explore the city by foot as it is close to market square and other attractions. The resturant is excellent as it offers great food for a suprisingly cheap price. The rooms are equipped with TV, minifridge and an A/C. Service is good and they try their best even though some of the staff has a hard time with english, which is a rare thing compared to other places i have been to in Russia.

We arrived just after 6 am, fresh (?) off the Trans Siberian 07 from Vladivostok. We were offered a room to sore our luggage, have a shower and breakfast all for 50% off a day rate. Under £20 so great value. Staff excellent with lots of English and happy to help plan our one night two day stay. Word of warning if there is a wedding on you may get roped in as I did. Good fun and luckily no one saw me dancing there!

Room tip: Plenty single rooms

Trans-Siberian travellers will find few hotel options near the main railway station, which is on the other side of the Angara River from downtown. This hotel is a longish taxi ride away from the station, and the taxi drivers in Irkutsk may try to take advantage of you by inflating their rates. That said, this hotel is great for exploring the city on foot. It's a short walk to the central shopping area, and also (in another direction) to the Tourist Information, the House of Europe, and the minivans to Lake Baikal. The hotel's A/C is useful as there is a lot of woodsmoke in the area when it's cold. One minus: while the hotel doesn't allow smoking in rooms, smoking in hallways is not discouraged. But rooms are comfortable and modern, staff are helpful and speak good English, and the restaurant is fine.
