Big rooms with all the necessary equipement. Great bed.
Clean fresh bathroom.
Well located.
Helpful service.
2 good restaurants (one fusion-cuisine on the 7th top floor & japanise at the ground floor) - quite expensive for Irkutsk.

While traveling on the trains Siberia express from Vladivostok to Saint Petersburg, my son and I made irkutsk our "recharge" stop. Intending to stay 4 days to see lake baikal and also get some laundry done.

First choice was the marriott court yard. But when I saw the web site of sayen, I decided why not try a local brand. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

When we arrived at the hotel at 5 a.m. From ulan ude. I was kinda hesitant on the choice as it was located inside a dark alley. But the minute we walked into the lobby, things started to look good. The receptionist spoke English quite well, the lobby looked quite chic and out of place in the middle of Siberia. Right after check and arranging our tour for the next 2 days we headed up to the room.

When we entered the room, the word boutique hotel popped in. Very modern, chic and high tech, with it's master controller adjusting all the lights heating curtains etc. the working table was extra deep, bathroom was just right with both tub and shower, and powered bidet on the toilet.

The bed was perfect except for the square pillow something that was in all the pervious hotels, must be Russian thing.

The next 4 days everything went as planned, the hotel staff were friendly always smiling. We did our laundry in the tub and also had the hotel laundry do our shirts, we gave it at 10 and it was back in the closet the next day.

We tried the 3 food outlets in the hotel, the Japanese outlet again was staffed with friendly smiling crew, service was excellent but the food could be better, the same with the American themed resto .
They're formal dinning resto on the penthouse was also where they served bfast. The bfast selection is done the night before and you hang your choices in the door complete with time that you plan to have bfast, whether in your room or in the resto. This is where all he'll breaks loose, the layout of the Russian and English menu is not the same so the staff will make erros and even if you fill out the Russian menu, they still make mistakes. Anyway the food was good and they're fast in correcting once you get there and if the serving is not enough you can ask for seconds. The view from the resto was fantastic place was well designed again keeping the to the modern chic theme of the hotel.

Unfortunately we were not able to use the spa, as it was fully booked in the last 2 days that we were there, we were so looking forward to the ofuro Japanese treatment.

Oh that dark alley location isn't all that bad, it's away from the busy main road and close to the walking street.

You are in Siberia and so far this is one of the best choices you can get. The hotel is very well located (Karl Marx street, 5 minutes walking to Kirov Square) and looks modern and neat. Rooms were fairly large for Russia and very modern in style. The bathroom was comfortable and well equipped. If you paid for breakfast included, then you will have an "à la carte" breakfast to choose from at the restaurant on the 7th floor. We tried many things and all were well prepared (but this is Russia, so do not be in a hurry, at least you will be waiting for something good). Breakfast can be served at the room for an extra fee. Service at front desk and restaurants (we tried also Kyoto) were fairly good. The hotel is a 4* property with European pricing (4300 RUB, around 100 EUR per night), but at least it provides some good value. The hotel seems to be more business oriented but we enjoyed it too. Do not expect nice views, but a comfortable and clean bed, nice TV and a good bathroom.

I often travel to Irkutsk for business - at first i used to stay in local soviet-type of hotel, with terrible service, no comfort and bad food!
I discovered the Sayen Hotel, which became my priority hotel when staying in Irkustk.

I will agree that it is a little expensive, but it is really comfortable with excellent service. I stayed 4 times already and each was perfect - now they remember and give me a loyalty discount as well as some small gifts. no matter from where you arrive Irkutsk is very far and takes a long travel and time change -- if you travel for business and can afford it i highly recommend this hotel as it will allow you to relax and recover from your trip a lot faster.

It has a great japanese restaurant and very good spa.

The Sayen is a great hotel, full of little details, with a great breakfast and excellent service. I found it however a too expensive for Russia -you can find this type of hotels for less money in NY or all accross Europe. We paid some 260 $ for one night.

As others have said this hotel is very much in the japanese style. It appears to be very much business oriented though there were several social events taking place at the hotel while we were there. We had an unfortunate maintenance issue essentially ruin what would have otherwise been a pleasant stay. One odd thing, we were required to fill out a room service request for breakfast (despite the fact that we intended to eat in the restaurant) and name the time we intended to eat. We were called 5 minutes after our appointed time to be told that we were late. A liitle too regimented in my opinion for a vacation stay. Ended up being too much food as well.

One in six (or maybe eight) rooms view is through the exterior fire escape (and the solo opening window in the room would allow access to the fire escape or vice versa). If this would bother you be sure to ask not to be put in one of these rooms.

Room Tip: See fire escape issue above

Business trip to Irkutsk and I stayed two nights in this nice Hotel. You can see Japanese style behind it: everything is tiny, clean and well done. Room itself was quite big, full equipped with a big bathroom and Japanese wc! Fantastic - if you've been in Japan, you know how is the super tecnologic japanese wc :) - Breakfast was good, but they don't have buffet formula, so you have to order and wait to be served...maybe the only negative thing I found was the speed of the service for breakfast...maybe a little too slow.
