“The hotel stucked in 1990th.”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

The location of the hotel is nice - right in the main walking street of the city. But the hotel itself is quite poor. There is a feeling that it stucked in the 90th of the previous century.
But negative impressions of the hotel are compensated with very kind, polite and friendly lady on the front desl

After living in Russia for several years and enduring awful rooms, awful service at high cost, we were delighted to find a quality Russian-run hotel at a reasonable price. There were nicely appointed rooms of a decent size with a large comfortable bed and quality bedding. The bathroom was clean and modern, with instant hot water. The breakfast on offer was one of the best I have had in Russia in both quality and quantity - with good hot and cold selections, and constant replenishment. The Americano coffee I ordered at additional cost wasn't great, but that's a small quibble as it's hard to find a decent cup of coffee more generally in this country. The location of the hotel was brilliant, right on the main Bolshoi Pokrovkskaya pedestrian road, where many of the noted restaurants and stores are also sited. The reception staff did their best to assist us with information about buses and boats to nearby Gorodets, responding to email requests ahead of time and face-to-face requests as well. The security guard on duty the night we arrived could have been more helpful, perhaps assisting with a bag or two rather than watching us drag them up the stairs. Otherwise the staff across the board were helpful and courteous and did their best to understand our basic Russian. There are a lot of stairs in the hotel - and no elevator - so older or immobile guests might find it a challenge.
Don't let a lack of knowledge of the Russian language put you off, this hotel deserves to succeed and from what I saw of the commitment of the staff, it surely will. It stands out in a country that all too often suffers from overpriced, underwhelming accommodation and hospitality.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on floors other than the breakfast room, which can be a little noisy.

We had booked two rooms - my friend's room had been renovated - new faux parquet flooring and furniture, colourful carpet, fresh paint, and ample natural light. My room was half the size, dark, dank, with ancient, ripped indoor-outdoor carpeting - and reeked of urine.
I of course should have immediately insisted on a different room, or changed hotels, but I was tired, and it was quite late. The staff's response was to light an oil lamp to cover the smell and suggest it was because of the recent rain. (Further investigation suggested it may have been because the room's tiny window faced an alley popular with locals reliving themselves after drinking.)
It was impossible to sleep and in the middle of the night, I begged a different room to no avail. In the morning, I refused to pay the same exhorbitant price as my friend, and was granated a small discount.
Nizny is a charming and elegant city, but surely there are better places to stay than this.

Room Tip: don't stay here

Charming place in a great location! On the main pedestrian street in N. Novgorod just steps away from shops, restaurants and cafes. About a 10-15 minute walk to the Kremlin and the Volga. Amazing breakfast! So many things to choose from, and all so tasty! Breakfast was so filling that I didn't need to eat lunch. Room was tidy and modern with ice cold air conditioning which was greatly appreciated in the middle of a hot Russian summer.
I can't say enough kind things about the staff here - they were beyond helpful and friendly. The day I was checking out of the hotel, I had an evening train that night. In addition to letting me store my bags there for the day while I was out exploring, the desk clerk told me that I was more than welcome to take a shower at the end of the day when I came back for my bags. I never would have thought to ask for this, and she just offered out of the blue!
