“Very nice room busy hotel”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

I stayed for two nights. This is a very large and busy hotel, and takes a mixture of tourists and business people. My executive club room was excellent, large and with all ameneties.

Didn't try the restaurants but room service was fine. They also left a few cakes for me one day, I think this was part of priority club membership. (Or they delivered them to the wrong room!).

Breakfast was pretty good, but could be improved further by a larger selection. That said there is plenty of choice and there is a station cooking up omelettes, pancakes etc.

Only downside was the price of the internet. My room connection was intermittent and in the morning wouldn't work. They refunded the price, but they need to improve this especially with the price they are charging for it.

The proximity to the metro means access to central st petersburg is straightforward. Note the metro has signs in English and well as Russian which makes things a lot easier. I had no issues with the front desk, who spoke good english.

Typically I do not write hotel reviews, however this I wanted to let others know.I stayed for two nights in this hotel - decision made on the fairly positive feedback here. Two things really bothered me. One is around the quality of service: a lot of people from the hotel are not really friendly, treat you like you disturbed them from something more important than to help their guests. In particular the Concierge desk was generally unfriendly, not only to me but also to others as I observed. In the restaurants the quality is low and really overpriced for what you get. They also tried to put some stuff on the bill which was not correct - talking to other guests, it did not only happen to me. The breakfast is awful by the way. You also get cheated when you order a taxi, as they only offer drivers which they work with (completely overpriced). There are also tons of groups here - therefore lobby is always crowded and noisy. Good thing is, that it is close to Metro and I used it regulary (cheap and reliable). 'Also on the positive side: room was clean and fairly quiet. Clearly do not recommend this hotel.

Although the lobby was very busy and noisy, our room on the 16th floor was perfectly quiet.

Our room was spacious and had nice appointments. The bathroom floor was kept warm in the morning by heat coming beneath the floor, a unique and nice touch. Our room even had a nice view.

We ate dinner and breakfast in the Rodchenko Restaurant on the 3rd floor. (The hotel has other restaurants on the 2nd and 3rd floors.) The dinner catered to mainstream eaters only. The breakfast had good variety for everyone.

The wi-fi was free on the first and second floors only.

The exercise room on the 3rd floor was large but only had a small amount of exercise equipment: 1 treadmill, 1 elliptical, 1 stair-master-type machine, free-standing weights with weight benches. A play room for children was also situated on the 3rd floor.

Visiting Russia is demanding enough. Staying at this hotel insulates you from many of the worries. We were upgraded to half lux thanks to our platinum status - thank you very much. The rooms were huge and the views from the top floor were excellent. The service was top notch and everyone seemed to speak English. There isn't a lot to see right by the hotel other than the beautiful Moscow Gate but you are just half a block away from the subway station. Be sure to at least descend down and come back up again for an amazing experience of the metropoliten. Nevsky Prospect/Gostiny Dvor (where you'll most likely want to go) is only 4 stops away.

There is a grocery store just to the South of the hotel. Right by the metro there are a few kiosks with tasty bakery items. A little further is the popular Teremok hot food kiosk. Currency exchange is a block south of the metro on the western side of the main drag, Moscovsky Prospect. Cross the street and you can induldge at a pirogie place or at somewhat more western Coffee House. Great hotel and a fine neighborhood.

This hotel caters to MANY tour bus tours so it is often crowded and noisy. I was put in room 445 and it was a Sauna. I could not get the AC to work at all and I was told that is how all the rooms are so I put up with it... until my travel companions arrived a two days later and their rooms were COLD because their ACs worked. It took me 3 days to get someone to move me out of Room 445 and they did very BEGRUDGINGLY and with serious attitude (from the front desk clerk).

The rooms were clean and spacious. The towels in the bathroom were thread-bare and scratchy. There was a bottle of free water in the room but it did not get replaced daily. The walls are very thin. I had trouble with a neighbor who didn't think it was wrong to have a room party until 3am. There are very few English channels -- BBC and CNN but the Russian channels are fun to watch if nothing else for the themes you see in all the movies.

Breakfast is included and it was below average. Lots of deli meats, vegetables and breads. It was a nightmare to get into the breakfast room each morning due to the large numbers of tour bus guests.

There are 3 restaurants on property... they were average and pricey. Instead go out the front door and take a right there is a supermarket next door and a few more doors down is Studio Pizza -- great pizza and Italian specialties and affordable!

Internet -- free in the lobby and there are 2 computers hidden on the second floor business center.

Currency Exchange -- there is a ATM machine that will exchange US or EURO but the bills have to be crisp and clean or else the machine will reject them. This machine RUNS OUT OF MONEY quickly and once it is out there is no more money exchange

The metro is very close again go out the front door and take a right its about 3 minutes down on your right.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with a working AC if you are going during any hot weather

Dear Nelle,
Thank you for taking your time and posting such a detailed review concerning your experience at Holiday Inn Moscovskye Vorota! We greatly appreciate you have decided to bring these matters to our attention and apologize for any inconvenience, any upset the staff may have caused you.
Please accept my apologies for any difficulties you may have experienced during your stay. However, I trust that our very capable staff was able to sort out any issues that may have arisen.
Let me kindly explain you that, unfortunately, there are only 2 exchange machines at our hotel and due to a large number of guests in high season they run out of money faster than usually. In such cases we suggest to go to the bank office right next to the subway station and exchange money there.
I have forwarded your comments regarding breakfasts and room facilities to our management team to take necessary steps to continue to improve our service
I hope that you will continue to return to us and look forward to the opportunity to restore your faith in our Hotel!

The restaurant during breakfast time was a bit of chaos (especially when Chinese people were around). There was not a sufficient variety of food.
The room was quite luxury and always clean.
There was no free wi-fi in the room.
The reception guys and ladies were very helpful.
The conference room on the second floor was not so good (the projector panel was so low that one couldn't read on the lower part of the screen dut to the heads of those sitting in front).
