“Art Hotel Rachmaninov: a pleasant discovery”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

I have visited relatives in St. Petersburg in late November 2013, spending five days at the Rachmaninov, and I have been pleasantly impressed by this small Hotel.
The plain doorway may be somehow misleading, as conversely the Hotel is actually an art gallery and the lounges (where you have breakfast), as well as the rooms, do spread an outstanding atmosphere.
The location is excellent indeed: less than 100 metres far from Nevskiy Prospekt (2 or 3 minutes walk from Nevskiy Pr. Metro station…), right behind Kazan Cathedral …
My room was rather small, actually, but that was made very clear at the time of the booking hence this is not a complaint; absolutely adequate for a few days stay, anyway.
Breakfast was good.
The staff are excellent: willing to assist, cordial and speaking very good English.
The lack of lift could create some trouble to some kind of persons (as you have to carry your luggage for two floors), however I am fairly sure that the staff is ready to provide full assistance in case of need.
Ultimately, I do recommend the Rachmaninov (good value for money, by the way), and I will definitely manage to stay there again if (when…) I will go back to St. Petersburg.

we occassionally stayed in this hotel for some days and were facinated by it.
we advise this hotel to those who really understands and appreciates the atmosphere of old Petersburg including old , a bit gloomy yards, it is special charm of St.Petersburg.
The location is great, near the Kazan Cathedral. Nearby there are restaurants of Ginza project, we advise Mamalyga, value for money( but don't advise Freeman's-horrible servic).
The rooms are nice, especially the bathroom, we had a big bath. The breakfast is served in the sitting room with piano..it's facinating...thank for the founders fof this hotel. The only disadvantage is the bar nearby, you can not sleep if you book room on the second floor.
the owners should consider this problem and warn the clients.

Room Tip: it's better to choose the rooms with the yard view and on the 3d floor

St Petersburg. City where you see the bourgeous hotells and shops. And for a single tourist you sometimes feel poor when lookin the life in St Petersburg. However there is a pleasant surprise in city center. Hotel Rachaminov. Small and comfortable. Total value for money. You can't have any better location to Hotel. Everything is near. Visaservice was quick and all emails were answered in one day. Rooms modest, but nicely decorated. Some have written about this Hotel that the breakfast poor. But for the money they sell rooms... No complains.

Hotel was immaculate, staff couldnt do enough for you. Lost our suitcase at the airport and the hotel staff were right on the case ( they were more concerned than we were) unlike most russians when your english! Beds were very comfortable and rooms were well kept! The lounge was very boutique especially with a vintage grand piano in the corner. Overall for what you pay u can not complain. Would definatly reccomend thinking about returning next year

The hotel is situated in the centre of St Petersburg meaning we could walk everywhere very easily. You do have to climb 2 storeys with suitcases but this is manageable. Inside, the hotel has a very cosy and artistic feel, with paintings on every door and lining the walls. Each room is designed uniquely and this gives a pleasant boutique feel. The staff speak a mixed level of English - there was one receptionist in particular who speaks excellent English and was very helpful.

The only downside was the noise from the club that is directly next door to the hotel. The hotel has two levels, and I think particularly those rooms on the lower level suffered from a great deal of noise making it difficult to sleep some nights - despite the comfortable beds. Thus, I'd recommend trying to stay on the top floor. The noise should not discourage you from staying altogether.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are quieter.

its hard to beat this location. We were aware there is no elevator, so you have to carry your luggage up on the 2nd floor. Hotel is right next to the Kazan cathedral, 5 minutes from Church of spilled blood. Our hotel room was small but was clean every day. Be careful, in the shower are 2 pipes, one really hot and the other cold. I got burned when I was in shower. Breakfast was OK, nothing special. Stuff was very friendly and ready to help. It is open 24/7. Overall we were satisfied.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A conceptual boutique-hotel "Rachmaninov" is situated in the very center of St. Petersburg near Nevsky Prospect and Kazansky Cathedral. It combines the museum area with a homely coziness, sophisticated atmosphere of the Silver Age with bohemian chic of nowadays. The owners of the hotel possess a unique collection of antiques. They also constantly replenish the hotel art collection with contemporary paintings and photography. In years of its existence “Rachmaninov” became a very popular hotel (apartments). Among the guests you can see celebrities, people of culture, consulate representatives, politicians and businessmen who are interested in art. On a fifth anniversary of the hotel famous St. Petersburg artists painted the doors of the rooms in the hotel with their fantasies based on the music of the famous Russian composer. The hotel, situated in the former commercial house, carefully looks after the room where Rachmaninov spent some time of his youth. The layout of the hotel looks like an art gallery and this is not accidentally – here the exhibitions of different artists regularly take place. ... more   less
