It's arriving and immediately being recognized as the travellers from the Netherlands and welcomed with "how was your flight".
It's finding a personalised letter in your room explaining that the Babuschka keychain is a gift from the hotel.
It's the triple flags on the desk - The Russian, hotel and Netherlands' flag.
It's the very friendly receptionists with amazingly good English.
Discounts at several restaurants in the area.
And so so so clean, every day.

Other than that, the hotel is in a great location. Right in the middle of everything, very close to the new metrostation Admirality. Walking distance to the theatre, Hermitage and Izaak cathedral around the corner (literally).
Very good and comfortable bed, which was proven by the complete lack of complaints from my mam with her chronic back troubles! Not too soft, not too hard, just right.

If any small remarks:
Some rooms can be bit small, requiring small suitcase or unpacking a big suitcase in the big wardrobe.
And breakfast is just minor cut above a motel breakfast - bread with cheese/egg/meat/jam, porridge (every day different type), muesli with yoghurt/milk and small selection of fruit/cucumber/tomatoes. On the plus side, nothing wrong with the quality and it does prevent from overeating ;-)

In short, great value for money and I would definitely recommend this to any and everyone!

Herzen House, Herzen House, Herzen House = Location, Location, Location
This strategically located hotel in central St. Petersburg was a true find.
In addition to the proximity to the City's gems the hotel staff made our trip an extraordinary experience. Weeks before our arrival and throughout our stay the entire staff answered questions, arranged a tour guide, selected restaurants and let us feel welcome and cared for the entire time.
We whole heartedly recommend this hotel for a great experience in St. Petersburg

The Hotel location is good as it is only a 5-10 minute walk from Nevsky Prospect and we walked to the Marinsky Theatre from the Hotel where we saw a ballet that was in our opinion a better performance by far than the ballet that we saw at the Bolshoi in Moscow and the tickets were hundreds of dollars cheaper at the Marinsky than they were at the Bolshoi (70 dollars as opposed to about 350 dollars each at the Bolshoi).

The basic rooms are small and the décor is old. The Hotel itself and its basic rooms are not up market at all. I think that there are some larger better rooms but we only paid for a basic room which was still quite expensive. The shower water pressure was very strong and was one of the best showers I have encountered in a long line of hotels.

Some people would find the bed a bit uncomfortable but it was not a problem for us. WIFI in the room worked well most of the time.

The breakfast is a bit basic but there is enough to get a start to the day on. The room/hotel was quiet, i.e. no traffic noise in rooms that look into the courtyard which was where ours was located.

The main issue for us was that during summer when daylight stays well into the early hours of the morning, the blinds in our room were all broken and the curtains were only lace and you could not get the room dark enough to easily fall asleep. The Hotel really, really needs to get new curtains or blinds as a matter or urgency.

All staff including breakfast staff were nice, well groomed, pleasant, and helpful and they spoke English and passed on any messages that were left at the desk for us. The breakfast staff were vigilant with refilling items at breakfast and were constantly making sure there was enough food for the number of people eating breakfast.

As with all Hotels you weigh up what you get for the price. I thought it was a little pricey for the standard we got but at the time I had difficulty finding another hotel in that location that was much cheaper so that’s why I went with it and it turned out to be fine for us but I could see how some people would be disappointed. Value for money accommodation is getting difficult to find and we were told that Hotels are expensive in Moscow and St Petersburg but we find that hotels are expensive almost everywhere unless you jump on a good deal somehow.

My advice would be not to book if you will be spending a lot of time in the hotel as its basic and not luxury by anyone’s standards but if you are out all day as we were then it was OK for a 4 day stay.

Somewhat spartan, but decent breakfast and so very close to every major site in the city. Our daughter found a place not far from here - much nicer and about the same price. I'd check out a few more options before settling for this.

We spend 3 nights there. The hotel is clean and the location is the biggest advantage of the hotel. The rooms are clean, but little small. Staff was friendly and helpfull.. except ot the airport transport. They proposed us choice between regural taxi for 800RUB and hotel taxi 1600RUB.. just for your information, airport taxi FROM Pulkovo cost 900RUB. Its my first time around the world, when hotel taxi TO airport is nearly 2times expensive as airport taxi FROM airport. We choose regural one of course.

Second minus was very boring breafest. Really cheapest food what you can imagine and every day almost the same.

And finaly third minus, they didnt suceed clean our room during we were walking outside. We left at 11am and came back 8pm with short break thanks the rainy weather for 90minutes. They ignored cleaning :(

I would recomend this hotel for everyone who prefers best location more than the luxury.

We stayed in a Superior room for 5 nights in June/July. The superior rooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable. The aircon is efficient and silent, and the staff are friendly and helpfull.

On the downside, the breakfast consists of the cheapest grade of mass-produced bread, meat and cheese, the walls are thin so if your neighbour likes to play music at 8am or has a noisy child, you will hear them, and there are thin blinds rather tthan curtains so you cannot effectively shut out the midnight sun when you want to sleep.

You can't go wrong with this location. 5 minutes walk to Nevsky prospect (wgich is the center of the universe in St. Pete's), 6 minutes to palace square, hermitage (and the hydrofoil station for Peterhof) and 3 minutes to the metro. Do spend the 450rup for a taxi from train station if you happen to take the sapsan from Moscow) as you'll need to change 3 trains to get to the Admiraltelskaya station. We spend 5 nights at this hotel and loved the service we received. In particular, Alla is super helpful. Breakfast is very basic but there are lots of great cafes closeby if you fancy something more gourmet. The beds are ridiculously small for 2 people. The shower is also very small and do bring your own shampoo, conditioner and soap unless you plan on using the 3-in-1 washing liquid. All in all, it is good value for money, is very clean and you'll find that you'd be spending most of the time outdoors of you're visiting in the summer season.
