You can't go wrong with this location. 5 minutes walk to Nevsky prospect (wgich is the center of the universe in St. Pete's), 6 minutes to palace square, hermitage (and the hydrofoil station for Peterhof) and 3 minutes to the metro. Do spend the 450rup for a taxi from train station if you happen to take the sapsan from Moscow) as you'll need to change 3 trains to get to the Admiraltelskaya station. We spend 5 nights at this hotel and loved the service we received. In particular, Alla is super helpful. Breakfast is very basic but there are lots of great cafes closeby if you fancy something more gourmet. The beds are ridiculously small for 2 people. The shower is also very small and do bring your own shampoo, conditioner and soap unless you plan on using the 3-in-1 washing liquid. All in all, it is good value for money, is very clean and you'll find that you'd be spending most of the time outdoors of you're visiting in the summer season.

The delphic title of this review is intended to highlight the best thing about the Herzen House Hotel, which is that it couldn't be better placed. The Hermitage is ten minutes walk in one direction, and Nevsky Prospekt less than five minutes away. You can be on Vasilevsky Island in fifteen minutes, and at the Mariinsky Theatre in under half an hour. There is a Metro station a mere block away.

The staff are friendly and obliging, and the rooms are clean. The down side of the central location, however, is that there isn't much space. The hotel occupies the fourth floor of a city block, and feels slightly claustrophobic. The rooms are not large (well, ours wasn't) and if you draw the short straw all you get to see from your window is a slightly scrubby courtyard. This may not matter if you only stay for a few nights, but if you're there for a week it starts to pall very quickly. The bathroom was adequate, but from the soap dispenser bolted to the wall came only a trickle of thin liquid soap which wasn't much good for generating a lather. Breakfast is included in the price, but it lacks variety (they will fry you an egg if you ask them, but this service was mysteriously withdrawn halfway through our stay), and the TV in the breakfast room either plays cheesy comedy shows or the news in Russian.

This may a sound a bit ungracious, but St. Petersburg hotels are not cheap, and after a hard day beating the galleries of the Hermitage a bit more room to collapse into would be nice. Still, there is free Internet access in the lobby, although I never did work out how to type the @ sign on a Russian keyboard.

Room Tip: Try to get one that overlooks the street.

The small hotel is perfectly situated in the very hart of the city. The Hermitage, Nesvkii Prospect and other major points of attraction are very nearby. The staff is very helpful to give all the information you need. The atmosphere is really welcoming with tea, coffee and cookies available during the whole day in the small but nice breakfast room. My room was very clean and spacious for Russian standards. Very good value for the money with also free Wifi. I would recommend this place for business travelers as well as for tourists.

This little hotel is very centrally located, within easy walking distance to the st Issacs and Winter Palace. The newest Metro station (Admiraltiskaya) is just around the corner. There are quite a few nice restaurants nearby too - we tried Teplo (ok Russian food, but somehow seems more popular than it should), Clean Plate Society (a basement fusion restaurant, great grilled shrimp salad and cheese burger, very reasonable price, a little smoky but worth visit), and several cafes.

The hotel reception desk is very helpful - all young people and speak fairly good English. They told us how to take the Metro and change to the mini bus to Peterhof and recommended taking the high speed boat on the way back. Great suggestion and the experience and the views were nice both ways! Their restaurant suggestions tend be tied to restaurants that they have relations/discounts, and hardly any Russian ones. We were able to find some on our own, and by just walking into restaurants that looked good.

We were happy that our room was ready when we arrived at 9am after the overnight train from Moscow, so we were able to take shower before heading out. The shower is Very good - hot water and great water pressure. The bed is nice enough, but tight, like double-bed size, with 2 separate thick covers. The air conditioner in the room is very good and came with an easy to use remote control. Our room faced the courtyard, so it was quite nice. Everything was clean, and it had plenty of closet space and drawers.

Others had said that finding the hotel is tricky. It is a little. Look for the address, stop by #25, directly under a big H sign, and you will see a very small door bell with 2 tiny name plates. One said Herzen Hotel, and one says Comfort Hotel. Once you are buzzed in, go to the 4th floor for Herzen.

The bottom line: I would recommend this place because of its location and friendly staff.

Hotel is located perfectly in central as its only minutes from the Hermitage, St Isaac's Cathedral and Nevskiy Prospect. The boats for the canel cruises and Peterhof are about a 10 min walk. The Opera House is not far away, about a 15 min walk. Corner Store for water is about ten feet away also.

Room did not have a safe, but the front desk was very helpful in securing items at front desk.

I very much agree with the other reviewers that this hotel is a very good value for the money. It was clean, the breakfast was decent (and included), it is an excellent location, the staff were very kind and helpful, and the management obviously work hard to attain a high standard of quality in this price range.

For those travellers who are interested, I did want to report that the wifi internet in the rooms is not sufficient to do any work that requires a sufficient and reliable connection, such as skype, instant messaging, or watching video. There were continual dropped connections and the bandwidth seemed to be very dependent on what others were doing on the internet. The hotel does provide a computer that uses a more reliable internet connection and is therefore able to do skype. However, that is in the lobby of the hotel and therefore a private skype conversation is not possible. If you are only interested in checking email, or don't mind using the computer in the lobby then you don't need to worry about this.

Since free wifi is very attractive to some guests (increasing more and more as people carry wireless devices) and this hotel advertises this, I hope the management will pay attention to this issue. Please have a computer expert look at the issue as this appears to be more of a problem than simply a signal strength issue (you may need to look into bandwidth issues). I would also put into place a plan to monitor the system for problems so that they can be fixed right away when they occur. Wifi internet is becoming more important to more people and some business travellers want to save money but still require dependable internet.

I see that one other person mentioned this in a tripadvisor review earlier this year. I did not see that review before I booked, and so I felt I need to highlight this for

Thanks to your staff for making my stay in Peter such a friendly and comfortable one.

Room Tip: Rooms facing courtyard are most quiet.

Dear Sfchris,

First of all I would like to thank you for choosing Herzen House Hotel and submitting a review.
Many thanks for such warm review and specially for appraisal of management work. The management really works hard to make the best for comfortable stay and create high standards and warm atmosphere.

I’m trying to solve problems with Wi-Fi connection. We’ve tried different ways already but it’s still works not good. Looks like the problem is the hotel located in the old building with very special walls preventing a good signal. Now when we are in way to increase number of rooms we can do other attempts.
I will be happy personally to report you about situation. If you have any questions or requests please do not to hesitate to contact me: natalia@herzen-hotel.ru

We look forward to welcoming you back. Kindly asking you to let me know if it happens. I will be happy to meet you and all staff will be happy to give you special attention and some VIP complimentary services.

Yours respectfully,

Natalia Stepanova
