I went to a performance of Swan Lake here one evening. The ballet was very nice and the building was impressive. But I couldn't find any emergency exit signs. Don't know if I just missed them or they weren't there.

We watched Swan Lake in Aug 13 in this theatre. It remains the best experience of our entire trip. The theatre is beautiful- reminiscent of the days of Royalty. we sat in the partierre seats, and had a wonderful view of the stage. The light footed dancers and amazing sets were an unforgettable sight. We had booked the tickets through our tour agent, since we were not able to book the tickets online since the websites are in Russian.

We were in St. Petersburg in August so the Mariinsky was a no-go. We did a lot of research and were concerned about some reviews especially the comments about cruise ship passengers and their behavior. I won't bore you with all of the research but it involved hours of Russian web sites and Google translate. We settled on this theater, balletandopera.com as the vendor, and the date that best fit our schedule (there are two ballet companies that alternate in the summer but some reviewers preferred one over the other and some felt the opposite).

The theater is beautiful, the seats in the center; whether on the parterre, the amphitheater, or in the presidential box; are better than those on the edges. We sat in the 9th row on the parterre on the aisle and the seats were excellent. We surmise that the seats in front of us were all purchased by the cruise lines well in advance (we bought our tickets 3 weeks ahead). I don't believe we could have gotten any good tickets if we had waited until we arrived in Russia. Although no one likes paying double the list price for tickets, this vendor has excellent customer service. They promise the best available tickets in the price range that you select, they offer refunds at no cost if you don't like the tickets, one business day after your order you know the seats you will have, they deliver to your hotel the day before your arrival date so you have tickets in hand well before the performance. You get a personal email (from a person) with a complete description of the whole process right down to the color of the envelope and name of the hotel person who the tickets were delivered to.

It appeared that all of the persons in front of us were cruise ship passengers and they were dressed accordingly. There were lots of photographs before the performance and during intermissions but not a single person that we noticed misbehaved during the performance.

We thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I admit that I am not a ballet expert but, we thought it was beautifully done. The performance was by the St Petersburg Ballet Theater (Tachkin) which is well respected.

We would of enjoyed this theatre more if we would of had better seat. We did not book this theatre ourselves so our seats were in the balcony and only one of us could see the stage. My husband had to stand to see the Swan Lake ballet. It was also hot in the balcony. If you decide to see a ballet here make sure you book your own seats and dont rely on someone else because you may be disappointed. The ballet was beautiful.

Visited this theater from the mid-1700's, some say the oldest theater in Russia, and saw a presentation of the Swan Lake ballet. The ornamentation and acoustics are top notch. The seats where a trifle uncomfortable but the presentation of Swan Lake was worth the discomfort.
