“Amazing beautiful place in St P!”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

It's basically a huge old buildings that's recently been renovated, with beautiful high ceilings and old style stairs etc. The two russian guys that run it speak perfect English and are hilarious and super helpful, as well as all their staff at reception. You can very cheaply rent bikes from them and they'll always help you with where you want to go and so on. The dorms are huge, plenty of space for everyone and there's a great atmosphere in the shared areas. Breakfast is free - milk with muesli/corn flakes as well as free tea and coffee. The area is also quite central and well connected by bus/subway. If you find space here definitely stop looking for another place to stay in St P!

Room Tip: Make sure you bring mosquito repellant: they are evil at night!

Stayed here for two nights in April and it felt genuinely Russian - no commercialised hostel experience here! It was undergoing renovations while I was staying which was a minor inconvenience [lots of dust everywhere] but nothing that couldn't be worked around.. in fact, it's such a beautiful building so I'm glad they're fixing it! The beds were fine - I liked how tall they were! - but try and get a room upstairs which is more recently updated. For the price you couldn't really ask for a better location, which is still central while being on a slightly quieter road than Nevsky - 5 minutes walk to a grocery store and all the trolley buses you could ever need! The only irritating part was that it really did feel like friends of the staff were randomly crashing in the hostel and were fairly antisocial so I wouldn't recommend it for solo travellers, but if you're with a friend it's definitely an experience worth having!

The staff are friendly and helpful. Our two-bed room was small but there was nothing to complain about. There was a lot of noise from the street, but surprisingly little from other guests. The location is very good.

Unarguably the location and price range are best one can hope for. However the staff, even though English speaking, were amateurs at bests. Not downright rude, but clearly the four people we met had not been in customer service before and knew surprisingly little about any obvious questions that might rise. They had disregard the request for extra bed in "additional requests" information field, they didn't know the number for taxi companies and getting the key required 300 RUB deposit, which was not mentioned anywhere in the policies.

The hallways were beyond dirty. Ceiling was water damaged in several spots, raining dust and plaster to the floor. Wallpaper was tearing off in multiple places, and in some places wall material was loose or not even present. We stayed in a private room. These are made look pretty design choices in the pictures, but being so unclean they were disgusting in reality.

The shower in 2nd floor and the toilets were dirty. In the 3 days we spent, the wash cloths were not changed. None of the walls, especially the shower walls, had not seen a detergent in ages. Old shaving equipment was lingering at the floor of the shower and trash cans overflowing in toilets. Toilet seats were not properly installed, and there was open uncovered electric instalments in the walls and roof of the wet areas.

We had the private room in 2nd floor with blue walls, sold as "the cutest room in the place".The room itself was shabby and obviously had not seen a cleaning in weeks. All sort of dust balls and dead insects on the floor, cobwebs hanging from the roof and drapes. Room also did not have a trash bin or any seats. The bed was "decorated" with something that looked like it was made out of strips of black plastic trash bags. 14" CRT TV and VHS set was present, but not connected to electricity and no antenna available in the room. It was accompanied by a host of self recorded TV series and few pirated tapes.

The mattress was horrible. It was thin, old, dirty and had blood stains on it. Bedsheets were too small to cover the double mattress, and pillows were a joke. I don't think even IKEA sells as sucky pillows. The bed structure was supported by instalment of 2 by 4's underneath so it wouldn't collapse, I have seen better in the recycling centre's free give-away-corner.

Watch out for insects, as you're going to meet a whole new level of them. Mainly mosquito's, but some unrecognisable blackfly gnat types too. It is still unconfirmed if there was bed bugs, the bite marks fit but we couldn't confirm anything. On precaution we froze everything when we got home and washed all clothes in boiling water, I want none of those to hatch back home.

I've been in worse, and that's the only reason to give it 2/5.

Spent three nights here as I start a round Europe/ Asia trip. The staff are excellent and can't help enough. Location is great and anyone coming into the city via Nevskiy prospekt will be glad to know two trolley buses (buses powered by pylons above) run regularly and quickly. 25r per person per way and you pay a person on these for the trip so have the money ready. No5 and no22 are the trolley buses. Note a BUS called 22 is not the same as the trolley 22. Ten mins round the corner and you're at the hostel.

Lovely inside (maybe a bit rough for some but hey it's a hostel for travellers) and our bed was really comfy.

Only gripes are that the ground floor room we had had no proper security on the windows which prompted us to ask to move to another room, which they did no questions asked, but the other room also had next to no lock on the windows. We remedied this by just taking all valuables with us when not in hostel. They also don't give out maps.

Other than that its recommended.

Great location and nice staff. Have a good time there. Great value of money. Very good interior decoration and large common space. You will like the atmosphere when you visit this place. They treat you like a friend instead of guests. Highly appreciate the staff working there and will definitely come back again.

This is probably the cheapest place one can find in St.Petersburg center (10 min walk from Hermitage). Right on the banks of the river Neva. Dorms with bunk beds. One cant really complain about the price. The only complaint I have are the mattresses which are hard and thin but the rest is really great. Kitchen is available to use coffy maker is there, filtered water for tea or drinking.Toilets are always clean and shared shower is spotless,But the best are the people running the place who are warm, open and helpful young crowd so one starts to feel like at home after few hours spent in this place. They patiently answer any of the question asked in excellent english. Backpacker heaven in St.Petersburg for budget travelers with the frendliest and most helpful staff in Russia.
