Owner description: The modest palace is set amid the lovely Summer Gardens, where Peter the Great held "assemblies" attended by aristocrats eager to maintain their social standing.

The new Summer Garden (not the picture given by Trip Advisor for this review - The picture is Petergof) has just opened after a far too long renovation. The Garden has gone from open spaced to fenced walkways with as many surveillance cameras as statues. Big Brother is watching! The garden closed after several of the statues were defaced.

There has been a heated discussion all over the media about the new look of the Summer Garden. We've been waiting for it to open for years and many people were very disappointed to find the old style missing. I visited the Summer Garden first when I've just learned how to walk :) I was used to the old style too. But having seen the reconstruction - I like the new design better. BTW, this design is really not a new one. All researches have carefully studied the archives of Peter the Great. That is the garden that he has planned and that's the way he wanted it to be. Come and see with your own eyes! BTW, a request for the stuff - please, change the photo! This is PETERHOF, not the Summer Garden!! =))))

The beauty of the gardens and the oppulence of the Palace when contrasted with the poverty of the peasants in the early 1900's helps the history buff undertand the Russian Revolution

One more in a long series of 'must sees' for those interested in the early history of St. Petersburg, and Peter the Great's influence on the development of the city. It's not Catherine's Palace or Peterhof .. nor did Peter intend it to be ... but the interior is still impressive, elegant and 'simple' .. well, relatively speaking, when compared with the Winter Palace, Catherine's Palace, etc. The gardens are magnificent ... a place to take a break and rest in a peaceful environment when a break from touring is needed.
