Nice square outside the Winter Palace. I think they said it was the fourth largest in Europe. Gather here to go into the palace but taking a tour lets you in earlier from the other side
It is good to look and walk through and to take some wonderful photos from of the historic buildings .
There's not much to say about this square that hasn't already been said, but I have to stress the need to designate some time to simply be there. I think a lot of people "see" it on their way into the Hermitage, but you should give yourself some time to walk the perimeter, take a look at the central column, and even do some people-watching. There are often couples dressed in beautiful historical costumes roaming the square (who will take a picture with you for a moderate fee).
A great square. I did not realise how big this area was. It is good to just look around you and walk around and see it from different angles.
This is the square in front of the Winter Palace/Hermitage on one side and two semi-circular yellow buildings across, one of them housing more Hermitage treasures and the other, military offices. This was center stage for the 1905 revolt and a lot of the action for the 1917 revolution. Standing in this overwhelming square gives you a sense of all that happened there during pivotal moments in Russian history. Drop dead gorgeous.
The scale of the palace square is just awesome. Surrounded by impressive historical buildings and built around an incredible central column (which stands erect only by gravity!), it's a wonderful space to walk/stand/sit, take photos, chat. A must see!
