Owner description: Contrasting architectures and wide open spaces are the hallmarks of this extraordinary plaza, which has witnessed historic events like Bloody Sunday and the storming of the Winter Palace and is now the rallying place for every imaginable political demonstration.

“A powerful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

The Russians sure know how to make a statement about the wealth and power of their history. A huge space and it must be one of the largest squares in the world. Surrounded by beautiful neoclassical buildings in every direction and overlooked by the Winter Palace, this is a majestic place. With a lovely triumphal arch on one side and the excellent Alexander Column in the centre, this is macho Russian stuff on a grand scale. The Alexander Column is the tallest granite column in the world and was so well cut, that it stands without any attachment. At some 500 tons, it would take some moving. The square is a statement of the power and wealth of Russia and it does it very well. If you have the space, the vision and the cash, this is the way to build a square - simply superb.

“Lovely atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

We were lucky enough to be staying just off this square, so had to walk through it many times every day. As everyone else has said it's very impressive, grand, etc. However what we really liked is the friendly atmosphere especially later in the day. Once all the tour buses departed, people were playing street hockey, roller blading, cycling, jogging. It had a much nicer feeling then and I'd recommend visiting later in the day if you can.

“An impressive space”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

This is a huge open area -- our guide said it was the largest such square in the world -- similar to Moscow's Red Square and Beijing's Tien An Men Square. It's certainly large, so much so that it almost loses touch with the buildings that surround it.

The galleries of the Hermitage are on one side, with Hermitage administrative offices and part of the Admiralty (naval administration) on the other. The arch between the latter buildings has an impressive statue, similar to that on Paris' Arc de Triomphe -- very photogenic.

“Grand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

Scale, scale, scale. Hugh and grand, think of the finest european architecture and then enlarge. Best to come in through the arch off Nevskiy Prospekt the first time.
