“A hangout and a place of visitation and lines to the Hermitage”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Every visit to St Petersburg should include a visit to Palace Square and the Alexander Column. The angel, snake underfoot, changes expression with the angle of the sun and each season. Especially in winter when Jack Frost plays his games with the column and angel.

“If you are into "Squares" this is one you should visit!!!”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

A vast open space full of history and monuments. On one side is the Hermitage, one of the world's great palaces. There are no railings or guards you can walk up to it touch it, or lean on it if you want.
If you go outside of the tourist times of 9 to 6 the square is surprisingly empty which in itself gives you a feeling of something special. In the middle of the square is the Alexander Column, the largest free standing column in the world. Explore the surrounding streets that lead to the square, which are full of interestings things to see. If you are visiting outside of the Summer months do wrap up well as the wind blows right through the square and will cut you in half like a knife. Don't let this put you off, go visit and explore.

“Another Concrete Wasteland”
Reviewed July 21, 2012

These large squares, are devoid of any plant life, to me are a waste of space. I see them in China, Russia, Romania, and even Italy.

Sometimes there are events held here. In the warmer months tourists will be taking breaks and sitting here. Locals selling plastic toys and the occasional busker can be sighted. Buses can occupy the square full of tourists in the first half of the day. In former years a mudless area was needed for formal functions.

While no doubt there is history that happened in this square it did not impress me but had the opposite reaction and I am no environmentalist.

“Go after 8pm in the summer”
Reviewed July 21, 2012

The Hermitage busses are long gone. The skateboarders, in-line skaters, drunks, and police are just starting their nights. Families are out for one last evening stroll. It is poetic and lovely.

“Amazing”
Reviewed February 14, 2012

The Palace Square is a surprise when you first see it- a vast area with the Hermitage on one side, the curved General Staff Building on the other and the Alexander Column (the highest free standing column in the world) in the centre. Plus all of the history that has taken place here (military parades, Bloody Sunday massacre etc) makes the Palace Square very special indeed.
