Owner description: The folk art, crafts, dress and lifestyles of the various peoples and tribes who inhabited the vast expanse of territory in the former USSR are portrayed on the two floors of this unusual museum.

I had the previous information that the Russian Federation is coupound by 150 ethnic groups, but facing this reality at a museum was such an emotional experience.
Cruising the Summer Gardens I reached that palace that is divided in 2 museums : Russian museum and Ethnography museum.
The only problem I felt was that the staff misunderstands both museums : I asked for this museum to a lady at the entrance and she conduced me to the Russian museum , probably because ethnographic is less visited.
The exposition is spread in two floors : at the first one you will find the magnificent Marble Hall , a 1000 sq metre gallery surrounded by pink Karelian marble columns. There , you can apreciate an exposition of carpets from all the ex soviet republics and other areas of Russia.
Siberians , Caucasians , Ucranians , Moldavians , Mountain jews , people from Central Asia , Volga , Ural area ,Karelia , all , all , absolutely all of them are represented there. And so do their clothes , artifacts , treasures.... what a lesson , it was unforgettable for me.
Unfortunately , I went there in the evening and as it was not almost closing , I ´d rather staying there for quite a long time.
As in all russian museums , there are lots of cutty ladies doing their best for making your visit the most pleasant as possible. They were so curious on meeting a brazilian! :)
Don´t miss this museum!

This museum is located in Arts Square (Ploshchad Iskusstv) next door to the Russian Art Museum and features the lifestyles, occupations, traditional arts, customs and rituals of the different peoples of the former Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th cc. Unlike many other museums in St Petersburg, it is never crowded, and is a nice place to visit if you are interested in national costumes and handicrafts.

Russian people (the biggest population among the many peoples inhabiting Russia) are presented in four rooms on the main level (1 floor). There is a big display of hand-made implements and utensils that Russian villagers used over a hundred years ago, and one of the rooms features their traditional seasonal rites, festivals, and holiday rituals.

The displays upstairs tell you about many other peoples of the Russian Empire: Ukrainians, Moldavians, Georgians, Armenians, peoples of Central Asia, aboriginal peoples of Siberia etc. There is also a recently opened Jewish collection, which is definitely worth seeing.

If you can spare an extra hour, visit the Special Treasury with a rich display of precious gifts that Russian tsars received from nobles all over Russia and a unique collection of Jewish ritual ware. An English-speaking tour of the Treasury costs an extra 250 rubles (about USD 8).

The museum is open daily except Monday and the last Friday of the month. The entrance fee is 350 rubles (about USD 12). On Sundays, there is a Handicrafts School working on the main level, where experienced craftsmen teach both kids and adults how to do traditional Russian handicrafts.
