Owner description: The focal point of Victory Square is an impressive obelisk monument dedicated to the citizens and soldiers of Leningrad who, through tremendous hardship, successfully repelled the Nazis during the 900-day Siege of Leningrad in World War II.

The Memorial Hall honors the defenders of Leningrad. It is open every day except Wed. We had our own guide with us, but guided tours are offered on the history of the siege & defense of Leningrad. This story is also told through a short film, pictured & statues.

The Memorial statues are above ground and the museum part is below. The statues are beautiful and reflect the military and civilians who took part in the defence of Leningrad. There were very few people there when we were there over the Russian Easter weekend.

The film on the siege is also very moving but we would have liked more explanation in English of the exhibits.

A lot of money seems to have been spent on this Memorial and we would like to see the same spent on the Siege museum to bring the two into line. This was an important part of this city's history and the courage and determination of those involved deserves to be recognised.

Be aware that this is actually a little known monument, and many people you ask will instead direct you to the Blockade Museum. There is a monument at street level, but the museum itself is underground. There are 12 small display cases, each portraying a different aspect of the Siege (rations, cultural events, military, etc.), and a display with 3 very large copper tablets which are changed daily, each one telling the story of what happened on that date during the Siege. Very reverential atmosphere. The day I visited, there was a chorale performance and poetic recital by childhood survivors of the Siege (or their relatives), many of whom were wearing the "Hero of the Soviet Union" medals they had been awarded. Be sure to combine this visit with visits to the Blockade Museum and Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery.

This is a very sobering memorial to the horrors of the seige. It is well designed and inside is careful to reflect the monumental suffering of the inhabitants of the city at this time.

Have to agree with you about this site.
So much so that on our next visit to St P this year I intend revisiting this war museum.
The haunting music is still with me 16 years after first visiting it. and I could never forget the 'loaf of bread' issued.
