Owner description: This dazzling blue and white Baroque-style cathedral, never fully completed by Winter Palace architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, is now used for concerts and exhibits.

The colors do not do the cathedral justice. It blends too well against St Petersburg's cloudy skies. But a climb to the domes gives great views of St. Peterburg's skyline and streets.

I don't review highly popular sites, as there's not much to add, but had to comment on this cathedral after seeing a following review labeled "Faded Colors". I can not imagine anyone who has actually seen this cathedral saying such a thing. The exterior colors are vivid and beautiful, and in excellent repair. There is nothing shabby about it. This is one of the most strikingly beautiful buildings in Saint Petersburg, set in a very nice park. There are already plenty of pictures of it, but here are a few more very recent pictures.

I was there before it opened and had to leave before seeing the interior.

;You can easily get to it by Bus 5, or a couple other busses that terminate their run very close to it's grounds.

We saw a recital here which showed how well the acoustics were. I did found the inside quite plain compared to other Orthodox churches I'd visited. This was not helped by some work going on that hid parts. The outside for me was the best, very stunning.

The Smolny Cathedral is spread over a huge area with the cathedral in the middle, the nunnery at the sides and the living quarters of the monks and the administrative blocks further down the edges. The area is well kept but the cathedral has fallen into disrepair. The once blue colour has now faded and the contrast between the white and blue is hardly discernable.
The inside of the cathedral is typical of that of a russian orthodox church and its not worth mentioning.

Altgough empty inside now , from outside the elegant architecture of the italorussian -baroque church is one of the most photogenic monuments in St Petersrburg
