Owner description: Built in the early 1800s to duplicate the Vatican's Basilica of St. Peter, this huge cathedral served as a monument to Russia's victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812 and today houses the Museum of Religion.

This church is enormous with countless icons and art pieces. There were services going on as tourists roamed around, with women covering their hair with scarves looking for solace kissing icons of their chosen saints or the virgin mother. Sitting on a bench and taking it all in was an experience in it self.

Along Nevsky Prospekt this Cathdral is impressive - facing a fascinating shop with a dome-like top and a short walk along a canal to deliver you to a beautiful domed church, this building stands out along Nevsky.

Cathedrals are a must in St. Petersburg and Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan does not make an exception.

You probably walk past this church in Saint Petersburg, so why not go inside as well? It's free, unlike St. Isaac's Cathedral and Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood. With some luck, you can even see some real action inside... Don't miss Napoleon's standards inside!

The main Cathedral for St. Petersburg, this used to be the "Museum of the History of Atheism and Religion" during the Soviet period. Now it is a church again and the main Cathedral for the city. Not necessary to tour, but definitely worth a visit when strolling along Nevsky Prospect. Ladies be sure to wear a head scarf as it is a working church.
