“History comes to life”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

We had read copious amounts about Peter the Great, Catherine and other Tsars and Tsarinas before going to St Petersburg. Visiting the Peter and Paul Fortress brought everything we had read to life - it was a magical experience. We were even there fore the 11am canon fire; and were serenaded in the Church. What a memory.

“Interresting”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

If only for the icconoclast statue of Peter the Great (Large body - very small head as the sculptor seems (quite rightfuly) to think that Peter was a bit stupid). It's a quiet and relaxing walk in the middle of this very busy and heavily poluted city.

“Well worth a visit!”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

The Sts Peter and Paul Fortress, and notably its Cathedral, are reminiscent of imperial Russia and its historic past. The cathedral stands proud within fortress walls, its spire spiking up piercing the St-Petersburg skyline. Inside, western religious architecture and Russian design are beautifully combined. This cathedral is also the resting place of the Romanov dynasty (and the napping chair of one very sleepy cat). There is so much history here.

“An island fortress”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

A lovely walk across the bridge to the fortress and a visit to church. They were in the middle of some restoration to the altar but it was so interesting to see how these young experts were working. The church is full of tombs all with a story and if you are lucky a choir will sing for you, magical!
