“Terrible Hotel- Avoid at all cost!”
Reviewed October 18, 2009

First, let me spell out the few things that are good about this hotel: the lobby area looks nice and has free WiFi, the breakfast is good and the rooms are cheap by St Petersburg standards. Now, on to the numerous problems with this hotel. We were initially given a room where the heater did not work. After repeated complaints, they finally shifted us to another room, which, to our horror, was a single room with an extra bed. As a result, there was no space left at all- you had to basically climb into the bed after entering the room. They continued to charge us at the double room rate, and refused to entertain any further grievances. The staff at the front desk were pathetic- the better ones ignored us and the worse ones scowled at us! The room furnishing is also very bad, and the bathroom is even worse. There's just one revolving tap which serves both the bathtub and the sink! The hotel is also very noisy- till late at night, there was partying in the lobby outside our room, and the hotel staff didn't seem to care! So, at all cost, avoid this hotel!

I was there for 4 nights for the purpose of visiting a conference, and I must say I was a bit disappointed. Paying 70 Euro per night I would have expected a much nicer room:

I took the standard single room. The room was looking to a 4-lane street, and the window was not very sound-proof. The bed was old, covered only with a sheet so I you roll around too much you end up lying on the matress. The bathroom was shabby, yet, I had cold AND hot water for the duration of my stay. The TV has Russian channels only.

The lobby is nicely renovated and the staff is speaking English (at least a bit). WiFi access is working in the lobby only. The breakfast room look very nice as well, and the breakfast buffet provides a generous selection of food. The personnel is nice and helpful, but room service is insufficient (my bed was made only once within these four days.

The hotel is located near a metro station and a naval academy (I think). The surroundings may not look nice at the first glance, but it is convenient since you can buy food and drinks in the close vincinity. There's a McDonald's and a few other fast food restaurants nearby. In a 15 min walk you can reach the neighburing island with is full of nice parks, and there is only one metro station to Newsky Prospekt (the centre of the city).

All in all, the stay was not too bad, but I stayed in nicer rooms in Paris for less than half the price. I would thus suggest to spend a little more money to get much nicer accomodation.

We recently stayed for 1 week at this hotel. We had booked a double room of class: "Comfort 2", which is a newly renovated room with is fairly large and nice. Located on the quiet side of the hotel.
The rate was 4300 rubles a night (about US$ 185).

Problems started appearing from the start.. Half the lamps in the room was missing light bulbs. This was fixed in one day. The fridge was not working and it took 3 days and repeated reminders for the hotel to replace it with one that worked.

But the worst thing was water. For 3 consecutive days we had no cold water in the bathroom, only very hot water. (Including in the toilet, which was a kinda strange experience..) Each day it was fixed temporarily, but the next day the problem was back. Makes it hard to wash yourself, not to mention taking a shower... The reason for this was really unbelievable; these renovated rooms have a bidet-hose installed, and for some very strange reason, the cold water for several neighboring hotel rooms are connected to each other via these bide's. So, if the guests in the room next door are pushing the lever on the bidet to one side, they are disconnecting your room from cold water! Being an engineer myself, I found this hard to believe, but it is true! So to "fix" the problem, the local janitor had to enter all the neighboring rooms and check the lever on the bidet.

In addition, on other days, there was a problem just outside the hotel with the supply of hot water (centrally heated for the city), so for the last 3 days of our stay we suddenly only had cold water!
Can't really blame the hotel for this last issue, but it would be nice if they could have had installed some water heaters in the basement for backup use...

We discussed all these issues with the Hotel manager, but found that she was not really willing to deal with it. She was only interested in temporary fixes, and not making an effort to make our stay pleasant.
It took a lot of arguing on our part to get anything to happen, and finally they offered us to change rooms. In my opinion we was tricked into changing into a room with far lower standard, that was very worn down and with a lot of street-noise. Once we realized this, they said it was to late to switch back.
And they even wanted us to pay extra for this new room.

Trying to at least get a rebate/refund to compensate our troubles was impossible. In fact, just the idea of compensation seemed to be totally strange to the hotel.

Needless to say, we will never return to this hotel and can not recommend it.

(For the record, the name of this hotel can also be spelled "Viborgskaia" or with russian cyrillic letters: "Выборгская")

  • Liked — The location was ideal for us.
  • Disliked — Not service minded - not willing to really deal with the issues that we had.
