“Nice Hotel, but frustrating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2011

The hotel itself was adequate and in a great location of town, handy to most everything. We were in SPB during a hot spell in July. The first room we were assigned to was very hot. After asking for assistance, they said it was OK and just took some time to cool down. This was obviously not the case when after an hour it was still extremely hot, but they insisted it was ok. After several bouts, we were eventually assigned another room and it was evident right away that the air was working. But then, any time we left, we would come back and the air was off and we had to start all over trying to cool the room again. And if we left the drapery drawn, when we got back, they were wide open to allow the hot sun to come in. We tried several times to correct this for four days, but it never got through. While trying to get a cool room at first, we were treated as if we were crazy and they were very put off trying to satisfy us. We also had trouble trying to get a feather free room and a second top sheet to replace the heavy comforter that was entirely too much in the heat. Other than that, the rest of the hotel services were adequate.

Nice hotel, friendly staff, quiet, good location.

However, the cost of breakfast is horrible. A small warning, the WIFII is not working in all rooms and some rooms are facing an very small atrium. They are not nice.

If you're looking for a city break in St. Petersburg this hotel is hard to beat for quality of service and location. Our room was large and modern, with good airconditioning, a well appointed bathroom and a big and very comfortable bed. Standard rooms might be smaller than business class, but even if they were half the size would be bigger than most UK hotel rooms.

Reception were able to supply support letters for our visas well in advance of travel, which there would otherwise have been a charge for from a visa or travel agent, and to take care of registration with the city (a visa requirement) on arrival. They also provide a couple of PCs with printers for guest use, so printing travel documents, checking email etc. isn't a problem.

The breakfast buffet had a good selection of hot and cold everything, including red caviar and sparkling wine. My only criticism is that the caviar was a little over salted, however this didn't stop either of us breakfasting on it every day we were there...

Nievsky Prospect is essentially St. Petersburg's Oxford Street, so there's plenty of choice for shopping and eating within walking distance. There's a metro station just down the road and trolley buses run past the hotel, so getting to more distant cultural sites and other parts of the city is easy.

We stayed at the Radisson Royal for 4 nights in June 2011. We were very pleased with the service and condition of the room (clean, spacious, comfortable bed, modern bathroom). The hotel offers free wi-fi and has a helpful concierge service that can provide good tips, help you get a taxi or find the bus stop, arrange for private tours in the city and the outskirts (such as Peterhof) and book theatre tickets for you. Of course, the hotel charges a hefty commission (60% of the price for last minute ballet tickets at the Boshoi!) but I suspect that this is common practice in most hotels in St. Petersburg. We were also charged a fee for registration of our passports with the police, which I think is unusual. We did not have breakfast at the hotel, but did try the resturant room service which was very efficient and the food was tasty. For breakfast we would recommend Coffehouse Company, just a few meters from the hotel on a fantastic first-floor terrace with great views of Nevsky Prospect.
The hotel is on Nevsky Prospect (very close to the Anitskov bridge) the main avenue in the center of St. Petersburg, with plenty of shops and restaurants. There are many buses and trolleys stopping very close to the hotel which is convenient if you do not want to walk. Trolleys can take you to the Hermitage and Palace square in less than 10 minutes, whereas walking would take more than half an hour. The Russian Musuem and the Church of the Ressurection are about 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the hotel, and so is the strating point of most bus excursions to Peterhof and other palaces outside the city.
Overall, we were happy with our stay at the Radisson Royal and would stay there again.

I have stayed at loads of different Radisson hotels all over Europe. The good thing with Radisson is that you are never disappointed. On the other hand, your stay at a Radisson hotel rarely exceeds your expectations. The same goes for Radisson Royal in St. Petersburg. The room was fine, location is excellent (just on the edge of the city centre) the Wi-Fi worked flawlessly, cleaning perfect etc but the “extra” that would make it a real top-class hotel is missing. On the other side, Radisson Royal is quite reasonably priced (especially compared to Grand Hotel Europe, Kempinski etc).
Two complaints:
Staff at the reception was not 100 % service minded. Not acceptable for a five star establishment.
Bar prices. A beer was about 7 Euro, while you could get one for 2-3 Euro next door (at a up-market place).
