Owner description: Built to memorialize Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble floors and numerous mosaics was modeled after 16th and 17th century churches, contrasting sharply with the prevailing architectural styles.

You can only visit the inside of the cathedral during the evening in the summer. It is a little expensive, but incredible.

Within this fabulous church is a canopy which marks the spot where Czar Alexander II was assassinated. It would appear that he failed to listen to the discontent of the masses and paid for it with his life. The work to create the intricate mosaic work within are tremendous. This is a photo opportunity which will fill you with wonder and will be difficult to surpass. At 250 Roubles it is a venue you must include in any visit to this beautiful city.

This is 100% tourist attraction, purely museum that is not used as a church. Indisputably must-to-see attraction in the city. Built in memory of Emperor Alexander II the church was aimed to remind Russian people about divine origin of Tzar's dominion in Russia. And about impermissibility of Tzar murder.
Highly recommended for a visit.
However there is a lot of tourist groups in a day time. If you're individual - come after 7 p.m. You can see all the same but in the empty cathedral. Very impressive.

An amazing church with a tragic but amazing history. Beautiful architectural details. Wonderful color palate - an explosion to the senses. It is remarkable that it survived the 1917 Revolution, Communism and the siege of Leningrad.
