It's very huge and beautiful museum. First thing you need to know about Ermitage - you never examine it for one visit. It has many halls, expositions, relics and pictures... When I was there for the first time - I got lost there, seriosly! You can see a dawn of the Russian culture, Egyptian and even the Greek exhibits. Excellent place for those who is interested in mythology.

Its amazing that despite the revolution and anti czar feelings, despite WWII, so much was preserved and not simply destroyed. Get on a small tour - DenRus does tours of St. Petersburg with 12 to 13 people. This place is worth the trip to St. Petersburg.

Visited the Hermitage and Winter Palace on our tour with Alla-Tours. We got early entry and it is a fantastic site. Our guide was very knowledgable and gave us a great overview of everything we saw during our visit. A must see when visiting SPB

In addition to the imperial splendor of the buildings, this museum has among the most outstanding collections of Rembrandts and of early 20th Century painting (Cezanne, Matisse, Monet, Picasso) in the world. There are also Greek antiquities, etc. Take at least two days to break up your visit. Make sure to buy tickets online in advance; it will save you a TON of time waiting in line. The only negative is the ridiculous behavior of tour groups of all nationalities who literally dash through the museum, shoving you out of the way to take pictures of paintings they don't even bother to look at.
