The exhibts are so many and varied that as a whole they defy description. The dissapointment is not in the palace and its contents, but that on a shire excursion you do not have enough time, and the place is stuffed with shore excursions! We resolved that if we go back to St Petersburg (and we'd like to) we'd go out of the cruise ship season. This criticism applies to almost every sight in the city.

The hermitage is one of the most beautiful museums i've ever been. It is gigantic, in three hours you haven't seen everything. booking in advance may be a good idea since there are always lines outside, but definetly worth waiting for. The museums is closed on mondays.
We kept losing track of where we were, it would be a good idea to make some sort of route on which you can see the most beautiful things.

Nothing much to add on the quality of the collections, simply unbelievable for some of them, or the magnificent interiors of the Winter Palace. The price, roughly 10 Euros for foreigners (5 for Russians), is completely justified. The ticketing system, however, is a nightmare, while you will have a hard time finding the automatic ticket vending machines (cash only, of course). Overall a great experience rendered a tad chaotic by the obvious mismanagement of the ticketing system.

The Hermitage really is the highlight of any trip to St Petersburg. It's a beautiful building with an amazing collection contained within. We had a guided tour and I'd recommend this as the building is huge and if time is short you'll want to see as much as possible. As an added bonus we enjoyed a fantastic orchestral concert in the evening as part of our visit.

All visitors are accepted so make sure you visit early in the morning otherwise you will not be able to see the Museum properly. At a certain point I could not set my feet on the ground...........
