Owner description: In 2001, the Mikhailovsky Theatre reclaimed its historic name, and in 2007, it was recognized as St. Petersburg's most prestigious musical theatre. Today, while preserving Russia's centuries-old musical theatre traditions, the Mikhailovsky Theatre is constantly pushing to be at the forefront of contemporary world theatre.

We purchased our tickets ages ago on the internet to see our favourit dancers, Osipova and Vasiliev in the Sleeping Beuaty on the 20th of July (we saw them in London and New York before and undoubtly they are one of the gratest ballet dancer couples of the world)..... I checked the net even of the day before and it was still their name..... to our horror we saw the information at the entrance that they changed the cast. ..... well we still enjoyed the experience, the beauty of the building is stunning, the show was fine, beautiful costumes, nice coreography, the dancers were oke..... the main female cahracter was fantastic, however the guy (Sarafanov) was far from what you would expect from the Russian ballet.... he was slow, boring and he could hardly jump..... So that is why the average rating,.,.,,.. the theatre is 5 star, the given performance was less then average......

Not as famous as the Mariinsky but well worth going to. Dancers are of a very high calibre and the theatre is charming - smaller than the Mariinsky but very cosy.

The opera house has a unique atmosphere and nice shows. If you like opera or bale, this is the right place to go.

Went to see the Nut Cracker on Christmas day, very good indeed, lovely venue. Drinks are very expensive. The hall is magnificent.

I went to see the ballet Spartacus and was quite impressed. I also saw a show at the Mariinsky theater. The Mussorgsky is recently renovated and lacks the run down look of its competition. The dancers were good though perhaps slightly weaker than those of the Mariinsky. The modern - even daring - choreography made up for it though. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening. If you are in one of the balconies, do try to sit in the front as the 2nd and 3rd rows will have you peering between other patrons for a good view. Fine if they know enough to sit still, but not so much fun if you are stuck behind a fidget. A final note, ballet is much more popular among women than men. Most of the audience is female. Some come in groups, but a surprising number of the girls are there on their own. If you travel alone or with a companion who doesn't like ballet, don't be shy about arriving without an escort.
