I think when you are in St. Petersburg go for the local fare. The hotel recommended this restaurant and we were not impressed. We started with steak tartar and enjoyed sharing, to much truffle oil for my taste but the meat was good.
Next I had a pasta with meat sauce that was terrible. The pasta was undercooked for fresh pasta and the flavor was poor. My husband had a risotto that was very sweet tasting and the rice was undercooked. Should know better than try risotto in Russia.
We like the space, the wine list was good and the ice cream was nice for desert.
Not a place we would go back to or tell others about.

We were attracted by the outdoor seating - not all that common in Russia. We waited at the bar for an outside table although the hostess said she couldn't even give us an idea how long it might take to get a table there. The waiter wouldn't take our order for quite some time, walking past our table, serving other customers and their subsequent requests. There was no stand for the wine bucket which had to occupy a significant part of our table. The menu was very varied in price - some of it reasonable, some expensive - but the food quality was invariably very high. Wine refills were provided when not needed and not when glasses were empty. If you have a Bentley or Lambourgini to park outside (as some did), I suspect service would be better. Otherwise to the left of the entrance, just one door down, they actually want you in their restaurant.

We visited this restaurant following recommendations and I can say that I am satisfied with the level of the restaurant, its menu and quisine. My family also was satisfied. Nice quisine, central location in Saint-Petersburg, good staff and Gerard Depardieu and Sofie Loren as the faces of this place.
It is not cheap at all but try to be there at least once.

We stumbled on this place on our first night in St Petersburg. It was the most expensive of our eating out choices in 4 days, but would rank well with any similar restaurants from home. I had probably the best panacotta ever and the choice of grappa was excellent. The veal medallions as a main course were well-prepared and served in generous quantity.

St Petersburg would not be top of the list for fine dining experiences and after a few days of struggling with mediocre and sometimes downright depressing dishes, the first impression of Barbaresco was 'at last, somewhere that cares'. The design is an exciting blend of wood and steel, with very homely touches. The materials and finishes used are top quality and the vibe is hip European. They even have a creche in one corner! Our waitress built confidence even further, because she was lovely (service is not big in Russia): attentive, discreet and smiling. But it was all down hill after that. We ordered from the attractive menu and then waited and waited and waited. The wrong dishes appeared and we waited again. When food did begin to appear, it was piecemeal and sometimes cold. One of our party had to wait two hours before his main course arrived! What were they doing in the kitchen?
