In St. Petersburg for vacation we found this restaurant very near to the hotel and it was a surprise. Nice atmosphere remembering the ancient times. Good food of a good level. Nice personnel.
Try if in St. Petersburg after a reservation, specially in the week ends.

Food was I can say good. Special? No. Maybe that's only because of what we ordered and missed out on better dishes . Service was pleasant. Very overpriced however. I feel it is more a tourist trap and there are many other restaurants offering better food /price quality ratio, with more Russian authenticity. Nice atmosphere although.

We dropped in this place following recommendation from one of our tour guides during a walking tour. We had no reservation, but showed up at 12pm which is the opening time and managed to get a seat on a Saturday afternoon, table for 2.

We were greeted by English speaking wait staff, our coats were taken, and we were shown to a table where we were given a bell to ring when we were ready to make our order. Funny to think that it feels somewhat intimidating to ring a bell to call for your wait staff's attention! The table next to us even implored a kitchen staff that happened to be passing by to ring it for them!

The wait staff are polite, attentive, memorised our orders easily without jotting anything down, and brought the food out in a timely manner; not too long between courses but we didn't feel rushed either.

My wife and I had one of the traditional soups each - borscht and shchi (?spelling). We'd had both these soups in some of the cheap eat canteen type areas, and to be honest, the difference wasn't too telling to our palates. We both added sour cream to the soups as we were meant to, I still haven't decided if this added or subtracted from the original taste. They serve complimentary bread with butter, which was above average, presumably home made, and freshly baked.

We shared Pelmeni between the two of us, and knowing it was going to be shared, the waitress brought our half portions on two plates for us. They remind us of Chinese wantons (we're both Chinese) in a good way, and again, adding sour cream changed what we tasted, definitely a unique experience.

I had halibut for my main which was cooked to perfection. I don't have much to complain about at all in regards to that. My wife had lamb meat balls, which I thought was a bit on the greasier side. The sides to the mains were above average, some steamed vegetables, herbs, potato mash.

We didn't have any alcohol on this occasion, and instead had a couple of freshly squeezed juices and smoothies.

All in all, it cost us 3500 rubles for good service, two drinks, two soups, a shared hot entree, and 2 mains. This is approximately $75 AUD to serve two people. It's not the cheapest way to try authentic Russian food, but certainly a very nice and affordable way to do it if you're used to paying more for fine dining.

The rating of 4/5 is because we reserve 5/5 ratings for places that are to die for, would return any time we frequent the city, nothing to fault, and would recommend to all our friends and family. While this restaurant came close, it didn't quite get there, would give 4.5/5 if possible.
