“Good hotel in convenient location”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

Martin hotel is a relatively new small hotel near Nevsky Prospekt and a metro station. It strongest asset is the friendly service, but the rooms are satisfactory and clean, although relatively small. The beds are fairly hard and don't have spring mattresses.
On the other hand, the bathrooms are modern and comfortable.
The TV has only Russian channels, but there is a very good high-speed internet connection which makes the hotel suitable for business travelers.
The staff obviously make an effort to serve a solid breakfast although I didn't appreciate the whipped cream on my fruit salad. But the food is plentiful and ok.
All in all a perfectly acceptable small hotel although I personally prefer to be closer to the Hermitage and the river which are a good half hour's walk away.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor , away from the restaurant.

We enjoyed a very pleasant 4 night stay during May 2012 and were pleased with the central location of the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and willing to help and communicated well in English.
Our room, number 6, was quiet and beautifully decorated and very comfortable for our purposes. Breafast - which was included in the affordable room rate - was very basic, but generous and their coffee was good.
Our only criticism is that the restaurant/bar area - which was fairly small - was a smoking area and guests puffed away while we were having breakfast - not appropriate for a designated eating area.

As owner and managing director of a young and starting international consulting company, I share the desire to have excellent stays in hotels when traveling. In 2011 we started a Russian company division in Saint-Petersburg and Martin was our first choice. A good choice, so it seemed later. The young hotel is by far the best in its price and class. The location is ideal: few steps away from Nevsky Prospekt and multiple metro stations. The accommodation is a dream: historic restored building, modern rooms and all comfort you need. Of course, their are some basics that people should know before complaining about things like heating and etc. Russia has other climate than Europe, the buildings are heated by the central heating system of the city. So yes, when the heating is running it can not be deactivated but since every room is equipped with a good airco unit, this can be compensated. Agreed concerning smoking issue, however again: in Russia their is no smoking law and smoking is allowed in public building like bars/restaurants/airports/etc. Concerning the service offered: a true dream. Of course there are sometimes some mistakes, but come on. Who hasn't little mistakes? Martin Hotel solves and improves these in very little time. Improvements I saw between two months (visits) were i.e. the introducing of a restaurant service, special aid kits, upgrade of breakfast offer and more flexible hours. Moreover the reception staff is speaking good basic English, the bar staff speaks minimal English which is more than acceptable for ordering some drinks and the manager (daily operations) speaks fluently English. Apart of her language and down-to-earth character, she manage to fulfill with her team all wishes of the visitors. My respect. Martin becomes our preferred partner for business travel accommodation!

Room Tip: Honestly, at Martin Hotel, there are no bad rooms. Upper rooms are closer to the public buildings...

Such a calmed and beautiful place to stay, a charming hotel next to all the city monuments, but little hidden from all the noisy city center, which is perfect. Stands out the design, elegance and comfort from that place. The service was quite helpful and kind, the breakfast: delicious. Everything clean and full of options and services to make us feel comfortable as home.
Definitively, sure we will come back soon !

This is a small new hotel--with the Russian talent for already appearing to be older than it is--located a block from Nevsky Prospekt, and across the street from the Metro. You are relatively close to all of St Petersburg's cultural and historical treasures, and close to public transportation for those farther out. The price is very reasonable, at 4,000 rubles per day for a double (or ca. $135) in the center of a major city: a clean room, modern bathroom, and breakfast is included. Above all, the staff is helpful and friendly. Not for the handicapped: there is no elevator.

Room Tip: There are only 11 rooms, some are larger than others. Be sure to ask for a larger room on the courty...

We spent four nights at the Martin hotel in a party that had two rooms. The rooms themselves we thought were lovely. My husband and I had a fairly large room that was nicely finished with a large bed and sitting area and decent sized bathroom. There were a couple of real downsides though. One is that the room got incredibly hot and didn't matter what we tried we couldn't cool it down. Another is that our room (room 3 I think), which was apparently the best in the hotel, was located on the ground floor directly next to the bar area. This created a real problem partly with noise but mainly with smoking. The bar area is where they serve breakfast each morning so that was right outside our door at around 6am each day, which didn't matter too much as we had several early starts. If we had wanted to sleep in it would have been difficult with the noise. The real problem was more at evenings though as every afternoon when we would come back to our room the bar would be full of people having pre dinner drinks and most annoying, smoking. The smoke and the noise would pour under our door and fill our room with stale cigarette smoke. As two non smokers this was almost unbearable, as was the fact that it felt like there was a party going on right outside our door which, when you are tired after a long day and would like a rest before heading out for the evening, is not pleasant. We did complain about this several times and the staff tried to help sort it out but I do not understand why they don't insist that smokers take five steps and stand outside, this is much healthier for non smokers. On the positive side the hotel is very well located and we found the staff to be mostly very friendly and helpful which is very rare in Russia, although there were several staff who spoke no English which made communication difficult. All in all a nice hotel, when the bar area right outside our bedroom door was empty!

Room Tip: Ask to be on the second floor, rooms are smaller but get as far away from the bar as you can!

The rooms are tiny small (at least a single room I had), there is no desk for work, so the only place you could work at is the little tiny bar by the reception. Also: 1) forget about nice wine at this bar: a bar person asked for a glass of chardonnay and some sparkling water (in English) just says “yes!” and serves you some awfull table wine and.. still water. 2) Yes, they give you slippers and a bathrobe in the room, but there is no hair/bath products in a bathroom, just 2 metal containers near the sink and the shower with some smelly yellow liquid dripping from it 3) Yes, there is a radio speaker with nice jazz music– only in a bathroom, but once you switch the bathroom light on, a VERY NOISY ventilator starts running, so you cannot here the radio. Other than this, all TV programs are in Russian, no CNN or anything and no other radio. 4) There is a “fully stocked” mini bar, but I drank all mineral water the first evening - the room was VERY HOT, impossible to turn the radiator off (though the only “special” equipment they point out at check-in was the “extra” heater – may sound as a joke after you spend a few hours in this room!), so I asked the next morning at the reception to re-fill my water and pointed out the importance of it. I was assured it will be done: “Of course! We fill our minibars daily!” I came back 15 hours later exhausted after a busy working day only to find out there is no drop of water in my room. 6) The check-out took some 20 minutes, as it appeared that the water from the mini bar has to be paid at the reception and the drinks from the bar have to be paid at the bar, the credit card terminal was only available at the bar, connection extremely slow, etc...
Summing up: Martin hotel is more a B&B than a 4* hotel. I understand it can be charming for some (more relaxed) tourist, but my advice for business travellers would be to avoid it.
