Saint Petersburg was a mystery city first. But we decided to break the ice and go for the Romantic week end! Well, it was fantastic! The weather, castles, palaces, fountains, ice creams, picknic on the grass in the Castle Park, and renting a private speed boat...The hotel was very much into creating the right atmosphere:)) flowers and candels were great!:) However I really wish you to see that city from another side: away from tourstic stuff,- but to feel the Romance there! :)
btw: they do 'quick-apply' marriages there:) :) :)

I have given prices - correct July 2011 - and my guidelines for how long the visit takes
.
Hermitage - pre book through the website. Hermitage opens the gates at 10.00 - but the doors to the museum do not open until 10.30. With your pre paid voucher, go in through the main gates - DO NOT QUEUE - and then got to the right and go intot he BLUE line na d just go straight in. You need to change your voucher for a ticket - do this at the ticket box slightly to the left as you go in through the museum door - easier to get your ticket quickly there. FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH IS A FREE DAY - IT'S VERY BUSY and a waste to use your pre paid ticket then! When you are at the box office exchanging your voucher, book for any of the guided tours they offer to the special collections - 300 roubles each - I recommend the Diamond tour - you go into areas that are not open without a museum guide and a pre-paid ticket. They are excellent value for money, in English and real eye openers! We spent 2 days in there and didn't see it all - how long you spend is down to your museum/galery tollerance level.....

Prices below are per person - and I suspect are the 'summer ' prices - which are higher than when I last went ( in February!!)

St Peter and St Paul Fortress - 500 Roubles - 2 hours +

Battleship Aurora - Free - 1 hour +

Church of the Spilt Blood - 400 Roubles - 1 Hour +

Going to Peterhof - Hydrofoil - from the Lions bridge - to the left of the Hermitage - and on the left hand side of the bridge - very easy to find - will be people giving out info leaflets.

Hydrofoil - 800 Rouble sfor a return ticket. You have to buy a single ticket for 500 Roubles and when you get to Peterhof you go to the ticket office on the quay and book your return time and then show you ticket and the reurn fare is 300 Roubles. Interesting system......
You then have to pay 400 Roubles to get into the gardens of Peterhof -spectacular!!
Entry to the Palace is another 550 Roubles.
You will need a complete day to do this trip

Peter the Great's Cabin - St Petersburg - 200 Roubles - small - 30 minutes

Political Museum - 300 Roubles - a couple of hours

Tsarkoe Selo - also known as Pushkin - is an adventure to get to - but not difficult! It is as follows:
Vibesk Station. Enter throught the main doors and go upstairs (the ticket offices downstairs are for long didtance train jouneys) - walk towards the platforms and go to ticket offices 14 & 15 on the right (they are near Platform 3). They are very helpful and patient at the ticket office - the staition for Tsarkoe Selo is actually called Detskoe Selo. The return ticked is very cheap - 75 Roubles return. So - if like me - you mangage not to see where the decimal point is on the calculator that the booking clerk shows you and think you are paying a fortune, you are not!! Do your calculations on this figure.- The train I went on departed from paltform 1 - but check with a guard or attendant - just to make sure!!
Tip for knowing that you are at the right station for Tsarkoe Selo is that is is quite grand - big stone building - journey time is about 20 minutes from St Peterburg - and any passanger - if you show them the ticket will tell you - people are helpful. - and watch out for a station that says KOE at the end of it
Return journey - make sure that the train you get on is for St Petersburg - SANKT on the journey board is the thing to look out for - and luckliy St Petersburg is the end of the line. The platform is on the other side to the one you will have arrived on and you access the return platform by a tunnel. There are only two platforms so you can't go far wrong.....
Once you are there you get a little mini bus to the entrance to the park for the palace. They are like little beaten up minibuses and quite an adventure! Cost 25 Roubles to the palace and returns fromthe opposite side and a bit further away - on the road from whenere you got off. No 371 and 382. Unless you have a map of the town, I would not try and walk this - as it is quite a distance.
Entry fees are as follows:
Gardens - 200 Roubles - fantastic!!
Catherine Palace - Opens at 12.00 for individual travellers - 320 Roubles - worth every penny and more! AMBER ROOM!!! Sdaly no audio tours in English.
Boat trip on the large lake - 200 Roubles
Alexander Palace - 200 Roubles - very poignant visit - as it was the palace where the last Tsar and his family lived.
This is a complete day out - and a big site - do some of the gardens and then the palace to optimise your time.

St Petersburg River boat trips
We did the nightime one where the bridges are up - from the same company that run the hydrofiols to Peterhof. BOOK IT A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE YOU WANT TO GO - as you don't want to turn up and find there are no spaces left. It cost 750 Roubles . Freshly cooked food on the boat - all very good and not excessively price - we only drank - a large beer, a vodka and freshly squeezed orange jiuce 375 Roubles. Boat trip was fantastic - we saw 7 of the bridges raised and went under them - you can of course just stand on the river bank and watch this - but the boat trip was fantatsic! The boat leaves at 12.50 - but you are advised to be on the boat by 12.20 - and the trip ended at about 02.50.

St Petersburg is a great city!! Lots to see and do! I can't wait to go back and do the things I have missed!

My family and I had a fantastic whirl wind tour of St Petersburg from about 7 in the morning to 11 with of course all the day light we needed to see so many of the sights. Dasha was an incredible wealth of knowledge, and I dont think we asked one question she didn't know the answer to! We of course saw all the great famous sights but the beauty of having a great driver like Alec is that you can stop wherever you want. We had the opportunity to stop in a great cathedral, a fresh market, the subway and had lunch at a local pie shop. Dasha also had a great list of recomendations for us to do in addition to the sights we wanted to like Dostoevsky's house! It was a fantastic tour and the professionalism of White Nights was outstanding!

We did a full-day tour, split between Peterhof and Pushkin, with Irina. Her English was impeccable - I felt as though I was speaking with a native English speaker. Further, she is an encyclopedia of Russian history (she was actually a history major, which helps). We peppered her with questions and learned a ton our tour! She has been guiding tours for 5 years so knows all of the in's and out's of navigating these tourist attractions, but she does it in a way that is highly customized to each customer's interests. I would highly recommend a tour with Irina! The overall organization of St. Petersburg Tours is excellent as well - our tour was very easy to book!
