I searched and found Red October Tours, I had never heard of them before, but we were looking for an alternative to the Princess Cruise Line Tours.
Interestingly they Princess Cruises provide you “IMPORTANT INFORMATION re: RUSSIAN IMMIGRATION” and inform you “Passengers booked on a Princess Tour do not require a Russian Visa”, this leads you to assume that you must book with the cruise line OR get a Visa – NOT TRUE.
As long as you have a tour booked with a recognised tour provider you will have no problem and Red October was outstanding, and you do not pay until you have completed the tour.
We did a Baltic Cruise, then a week in Paris and a few days in Hong Kong – our trip highlight was our private 2 person / 2 day tour with Red October in St Petersburg. Our guide was Catherine and our driver Gena. We live in Australia it was necessary that everything worked (it is a long way if you have to go back), we booked online no problems.
I am emphasising all this information to ensure you, it is correct. I was really annoyed that the Cruise line is not completely truthful.
Anyone arriving by cruise ship and doing a tour in Russia you are given a 72 hr visa.

For Reference – this was our tour
Pickup outside Passport control
City orientation drive: main streets and squares of St. Petersburg.
Early admission - Peterhof: “Russian Versailles”, official Summer Residence of Russian Tsars
Stroll through the wonderful “Lower Park” with its fountains.
Hydrofoil back to St Petersburg – drive meets you at dock
Tour of the Hermitage Arts Museum Living and gala halls of the Winter Palace
Faberge Museum
Return to ship

Pickup outside Passport control
Departure for Tsarskoye Selo, official residence of Russian Tsars.
Early admission - Catherine Palace - Amber Room included
Stroll in the beautiful Catherine park with its numerous pavilions and small palaces, ponds and canals, marble statues and monuments.
Drive back to St. Petersburg.
Walking at Nevsky Prospect – the main street of St. Petersburg.
A short stop to pay RED OCTOBER invoice
Visit Peter-and-Paul Fortress, including inside
Return to ship

Our guide Catherine, spoke English perfectly, along with her knowledge and experience, we avoided crowds everywhere we went and she knew where the easily accessible toilets were, may sound silly, but you could queue for 30minutes or more in some places.
Gena our driver was a pure gentleman chauffeur with incredible local knowledge and his experience in the Mercedes Van, kept us out of traffic.
If you ever get the chance to go to St Petersburg, on a cruise or not, use Red October Tours
Thank you again to Catherine & Gena – our holiday highlight.
PS St Petersburg on a cruise - you do NOT need a visa – you do NOT have to do a ship tour, but you cannot just get off and walk around, you must be escorted by a recognised tour provider.

Our family recently did a Baltic Cruise and we decided to book a tour in St. Petersburg through Red October based on the recommendation of our friends who used them years ago to tour the city. We are so glad we did as it was the highlight of our cruise experience. Alona, our tour guide, and Gena, our driver, were courteous, full of knowledge, and fun to travel around the city with in the car. We really appreciated how Alona adapted our tour for our two boys and actively engaged them. She was also great about showing us so much of the city without pushing us too hard when we needed more time at a particular location. Red October was very professional to deal with throughout the planning of the trip and in conducting the trip. We followed the plans as needed and Alona was great about meeting our individual exceptions (like going to the Pavel Bure hockey store :)).

We met Marina very early in the morning on our cruise with Celebrity on the first day in St. Petersburg. She was accompanied by our driver, Vladimir, and off we went. We visited several historic sites and viewed a great deal of the city as we transited to the Hermitage. She had arranged the tickets in advance and ushered us in ahead of a very long queue at the entrance. Her knowledge of the building, traffic patterns in the museum, and the collection were awesome. She maneuvered us carefully through the museum and I felt that we used our time to the best possible usage.
We then took the high speed ferry to Peterhof, as traffic is a nightmare in town. The driver followed us and was there when we left Peterhof. A truly stunning palace with truly impressive fountains and gardens. Well worth the visit.
We drove back to town with continuous narration from Marina as we looked at old, Soviet era, and new St. Petersburg.
A terrific day and at that point in the cruise a second day would have been too much for these weary travelers. Excellent and highly recommended.

Our guide Katrina was wonderful. Very knowledgeable. Got us in before the crowds to most of the attractions. Explained things, answered questioned. Let us wander with her thru the parks and shops. A full two days but worth every minute. Such a memory!!!!
Buy the stacking dolls. The lacquer boxes are nothing to speak of. Amber is pretty but expensive. The linens are nice and reasonable. I would do this tour again!!!

Spent 2 days seeing St Petersburg. Our guide was knowledgable, pleasant and willing to answer countless questions for 1st time visitors. Only complaint is sights were so crowded and did not have time to enjoy experience.
