We saw Tosca at the new Mariinsky II theatre. Maestro Gergiev conducted and the orchestra played very well. But the real attraction is the brand new 2000 seat opera house. From the outside it is a glass box behind the original Mariinsky, but inside it is magnificent. The auditorium has a good live acoustic and is largely in light coloured wood. The seats are spacious and comfortable and, like us, most of the audience spent the time before curtain up taking photos. Russia spent 200 billion (yes billion) roubles on the theatre and it shows in the gorgeous Onyx translucent wall coverings in the spacious lobbies. We had prosecco and nibbles in the cafe and interval drinks and the staff were English speaking and friendly. A great evening. Afterwards we went to Romeo Bar and Restaurant for a meal, also recommended.
