My daughter and I had a fantastic time tonight at Teplo! Our waitress could not have been nicer - she truly was warm and inviting, and took the time to really talk to me and my sweet girl - we truly felt at home! The strawberry Mojito was delicious, and so was my daughters strawberry orange shake. The chili shrimp salad with mango, orange and grapefruit was perfect, and the Russian potato pancakes with sour cream were delicious and filling (unfortunately that meant no room for more than a bite of my gargonzola pear). My daughter had pasta with cheese and butter and cleaned her plate. For dessert she had the Napoleon cake and told me she loved it! Our waitress was even kind enough to call us a cab since we had worn ourselves out walking all day, and gave us a bag of cookies to go! Try to get a table on the adorable patio if possible, and be prepared for a long wait if you haven't booked ahead - it is crazy busy, even on a Sunday night!

Teplo has both indoor and outdoor seating. While we did not sit indoors, it is a rather quirky set of "cozy" rooms that might be very comfortable on a cold winter night. As it was quite warm in SPB in June, we opted for the outdoor seating, which was pleasantly cool in a completely enclosed courtyard. The food was casual-contemporary with a reasonable selection of wines. Service was excellent and very friendly. Prices were a bit more reasonable than many local restaurants. All in all a very pleasant dinner on a hot summer evening.

Тепло (Teplo) means Warmth or Heat. The young(ish) staff makes you feel welcome.

The place scores with a style of quirky, pseudo-home-like restaurants. These apparently are in vogue with young Russians who do not drive BMW SUV coupes that their better-connected, weight-lifted, yet somewhat overweight, hairless and neckless peers do.

During our two visits in mid-June, there were young folks there apparently celebrating one graduation or another.

The permanent menu in a binder with quirky 'foreign' photos listing dishes and drinks indicates what to expect - somewhat rigid choices of meals that are well-executed, if a bit forgettable. The Russian dining landscape is so desperate that that Teplo scores a straight B. To qualify this: a B in the Russian dining landscape means that it is only ~1.5 to 2-times more expensive than Paris. Compared to the alternatives, Teplo scores high.

Higher than a nearby alternative, Gosti. Same idea, slightly better results at comparable cost.

Unless desperate, neither place would be worth a detour - Teplo has a bit of a margin.

In neither place, ordering wine would not please a Wine Advocate adherent.

Teplo can easily be overlooked – just two small signs indicate the courtyard entrance in a quiet semi-residential street. It would be sad it you missed it.

Teplo is located just around the corner from Isaac' s Cathedral, one of St Petersburg's main attractions, and within easy walking distance from the Astoria Hotel .

The restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel's concierge, but we could not get a table on a Thursday evening, so we ended up at Palkin restaurant for that night (see my other review). We finally reserved a table for our small group in the courtyard for Friday night, and as soon as we had finished our wonderful and not too pricey dinner on Friday, we decided to make another reservation for Saturday right then and there.

The best tables are within the courtyard outside, comfortably shaded and protected from the vagarities of Russian summer weather. The 'normal' rooms in the restaurant are in the basement, small and a little bit like a rabbit warren- but a very cozy and comely one.

The guests are a mixture of young Russians and tourists. With the exception of one or two male bartenders, the whole staff seemed to consist of young female students, all of them smiling, all out to make the evening for everyone an unforgettable dining experience. Anna, our server, really made these two meals, these evenings something special. And her English, by the way, was excellent, which made communication with her super easy.

The lovely menu looks like a small photo book from way back when, there are childhood photos pasted together with the pages of the menu ( in Russian and English).

We tried some of their most famous dishes - pancakes with salmon and red caviar for starters, soup of dried mushrooms, fish soup, beef medaillions with your choice of three sauces, beef stroganoff, lamb, halibutt- everything was really fine.

Desserts- for those with a sweet tooth- pose a difficulty. What is a better dessert? Apple layer cake or hot chocolate cake with ice cream? Really tough decisions....

They serve a good Belgian draft beer, moderately priced good wines from all over the world and a terrific espresso.

The bill is served in an envelope, adorned by hand-made paintings or memos. If you like the envelope - feel free to take it with you, but you are asked to prepare a new one in return.

So I'd say: Book your table well in advance and enjoy.

We ate at this restaurant two times during our trip to Saint Petersburg during WhiTe Nights. The food was very good, the service excellent and the price reasonable. Our waiter, Max, was very helpful. The restaurant is well located, one block from Saint Isaacs. Reservations are a must. We had no problem getting a reservation. Have the hotel make the reservation for you. It had a mix of Locals and tourists, mainly tourists. Go on the early side as they do run out of dishes, especially desserts. Good for families. Restaurant has a special playroom for children. Majority of guests were adults without families.
