Food is good but rather expensive for St Pet, the location and what if offered. You will not face a disappointment but also nothing special.

As we expected based on our from previous stays with Orient Express elsewhere, the service was excellent. Reservation and Concierge services still managed to exceed expectations in respect of our special requests to make my 50th birthday a very special occasion.

The wait for check-in was a bit slow but the welcome glass of champagne was much appreciated, as were the flowers and chocolates in the room on arrival and other gifts throughout our stay (birthday card, engraved wine glasses, more chocolates etc). We had asked for a Terrace Room to enjoy the White Nights. Rooms 501-506 offer some morning sun and great sunset with best room views over Church over Spilled Blood, Russian Museum and Arts Square though terraces are not overly private due to the low balcony dividers. We knew that there would be some trade off in terms of space (the Terrace Rooms are the smallest in the hotel with the exception of Suite 509 which has a wrap around terrace) but the lack of a walk in shower was a bit of a disappointment. Nor were there any in room tea/coffee making facilities. Otherwise we had all the amenities that we would expect. Our one big complaint is that the hotel was upgrading their air-conditioning system whilst we were in the middle of a heatwave. The sensor in the new air con unit didn’t work. As a result the room temperature overnight never got below 27 degrees which made it very difficult to sleep. After several complaints and engineer visits, the hotel provided a fan which helped a bit (plus we received more complimentary wine and chocolates!). Hence the four not five star rating. Also, food offerings were mixed.

For breakfast you have a choice of venues (main L’Europe dining room plus Mezzanine). This hotel is not overly large but accepts groups and so there are peaks and troughs for breakfasts. Also, the service is not controlled as well as it could be – some group members did not sit at their pre-allocated table. As a result, on our first morning we were asked to sit a group table for eight. We were advised that we needed to go down for breakfast between 0700 – 0715 if we wanted a table for two. Excellent buffet breakfast offering with made to order eggs. Freshly squeezed orange juice isn’t on show and isn’t always offered but is available if you ask.

The Caviar bar was a small and formal but not overly intimate or romantic restaurant . The maître d’ was brusque to say the least and it seemed as if the restaurant could not cope with the albeit small number of guests. Even though we had reserved a table we had to wait a long time for menus. We had to ask for wine list which took a long time coming and which was removed before we had chance to order (presumably because most people look but don’t buy when they see the prices). Our egg in egg with truffle and caviar special starter was good. After that our waitress asked us to confirm our main course as she could not remember what we had ordered. There was no wine waiter to help with wine or vodka selection. The guitarist and violinist were excellent - otherwise not a great first night.

Little to say about our meal at Rossi. Starters OK – tuna tartar and carpaccio. The sea bass main was also OK but the saltimbocca was dreadful.

In contrast we had fantastic meal at L’Europe on the final night of our stay. Good atmosphere and music from violinist and pianist followed by ballet duo (not great view of latter as priority for front tables was given to group tours). Good selection of traditional Caviar appetisers. The salmon tartar and foie gras starters were sublime as was the wagu tenderloin main. The birthday cake complete with sparklers was very touching as were the additional birthday/farewell gifts. This was definitely the culinary highlight of our stay in Russia.

Great meal at Chopsticks on our final day though this was on the pricey side for a lunch (typical of all meals in Russia).

Through our tour operator we pre-arranged a private guide for our 5 days in St Petersburg, Olga Binetskaya (email: biolst@mail.ru) who we would highly recommended. She spoke excellent English and was very attentive to our special requests. See our separate reviews of the Hermitage; Yusupov Palace; Peterof; Pavlovsk; Tsarskoye Selo (Catherine’s Palace); and Oranienbaum.

Final point – make sure you have mosquito repellent if you are prone to bites! I received several but these did not detract from a really fantastic stay.

If you're looking for a spot near Nevsky Prospect for some authentic local food, Orient Express has a menu and a kitchen that will satisfy. For St. Petersburg, the prices are quite reasonable and in line with what would be considered a mid priced meal here. That's not to say it's a budget meal, but you can (and many WILL) pay much more for the same food elsewhere in this neighborhood. What I like about Orient Express is that the preparations of dishes are done with care. My wife is born and raised right across the street from this restaurant and this is absolutely a restaurant locals enjoy for comfort food of Russia.

We had a very pleasant meal with a group of friends. Service wa excellent & the waitresses all spoke excellent English. A wide-ranging menu with good options for non-meat eaters. Georgian cooking v good. Negatives: only one piece of fish left at 8 o'clock on a Tuesday & food not that hot when served. We'd go again to give it another try.

We enter at 22.00 to have dinner because the guy in the entrance insisted us to get into it. All our plates were arriving in different times. Before one of us was even finished her plate the waitress came with the bill because they needed to close the till, we requested a dessert but she said that he cook was left and was not possible to order anything else. We paid and just after that the manager insisted us to leave the rewtaurant as they were closing (I was still with my drink and I couldn't finished it!) and when we get to the door in order to leave we realized that there was another 2 tables with people that were still having dinner!!we wanted to complaint but suddenly nobody was able to speak English (although before we entered everyone seemed to speak fluent English). We were forced to paid 600 rb even if we were not happy at all with the service, and when we asked for a explanation and for the complaining letter there was none answer and just laughts.

No worth it at all, they just do not care about the clients and make fun of them.
