Description: Long recognized as one of St. Petersburg's finest restaurants, the Old Customs House has a superb location in a historic building just behind the Kunstkamera. Popular with wealthy tourists and well fed local businessmen, the restaurant has conservative but attractive interiors and a fairly formal atmosphere, which is no surprise considering the high prices. The owners are British and the head chef is currently Russian, but the menu is very much based on traditional French bourgeois cuisine, with rich sauces, winter vegetables, truffles and foie gras. A few more modern, Asian influences make an occasional appearance, but the highlight is probably the fresh seafood flown in from the farthest corners of Russia (Kamchatka crabs and Sakhalin oysters). The wine-list is similarly robust and reassuringly expensive. The restaurant regularly hosts guest chefs from all over the world, as has been visited by numerous international celebrities, from Prince Charles to the Russian Patriarch.

I have been there twice. November 2012 and November 2013. Excellent food, well priced. Good wine, a bit over-priced. Service is very good. Also the music. Good jazz musicians.

Thank RolvP

“Business fixed dinner: but excellent!”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

Large business group seated at a single large table: menu was fixed and I think fairly priced (though certainly not inexpensive), with alcohol added:
Salmon Gravlax with frozen horseradish
Crab Salad TURTO with tomato bavarois
Ravioli - Fagottini of wild mushrooms with vintage Parmesan Reggiano
Wild Seabass grilled with green asparagus and saffron sauce -OR-
Roasted Beef Fillet with confit of shallots, with new potatoes and black truffle sauce
Millefeuille of raspberry & mascarpone

I had the seabass...

All VERY nice indeed and excellent service, would be happy to return!

“Decent Place”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

An old building has been smartly retrofit to look like an antique cave.
The hall is rather big and , when we arrived was rather empty but later on got some more patrons.
The meals -served with amuse bouche - have been very good, well done. We suggest to try the Kamchatka Crab Salad, the Wild sea-bass or the Russian Fish selection.
They had a comprehensive wine list but grossly overpriced.
The service was good but not special; we found the waiters rather distant.
Considering the patrons the atmosphere was not very lively but the surprise came from the singer with a nice voice offering an attractive rhythm and blues selection

“Overrated and overpriced”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

Visited this restaurant based on travel agent review as was classed as one of the finest restaurants in st P. it is a. Lovely interior and we dressed up for the evening to find other diners very casual and also ended up next to a family with pushchair which did not fit with fine dining in our opinion. Amuse bouche was disappointing but food after that was OK. Waitress appeared a trainee and other tables had a palate cleanser which we were not offered, don't know if we should have been or not. Waitress forgot my husband's potato dish and looked like a rabbit in headlights when we pointed it out, she did not know what to do so just said sorry! Overall very disappointing and felt like money wasted.

“The best in St Petersburg”
Reviewed June 29, 2013 via mobile

Top of the range for St Petersburg out of hotel dining. Ex Londoner Tony supervises this and three others in St petersburg. Tony was at Savoy in london and Grand Europe of st petersburg. Service is his passion and how he continually trains Russian staff to a consistantly high standard. Well known in St Petersburg he even has his portrait serving the nobility in the private back room. Decor is warm, interesting, traditional style and inviting if formal. I guess a certain VVP knows the place well and may drop in occasionally for his private tete a tete. Now for the F&B. It's pricey but so is a bottle of water in this town. Good wines are at least 5 times price of London restaurants and 10 for the US. Medium priced wines can be found but tough to get anything to match the setting at less than $100 a bottle. Food from salads to fish and meats well prepared, served ( think tin hats) precisely, none of the plate by plate service of some ' top' Russian restaurants. Deserts are sumptuous and complimentary chocolates super.
Go on treat yourself. If you want a great meal in one of the best restaurants of St Petersburg, don't look too closely at the bill.
