Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Stovolaya #1 Kopeika serves the entire gamut of St. Petersburg society: students, pensioners, working people, commuters, everyone. Well, maybe not an "oligarch". It's a cafeteria. You take a tray and go along the line, where all food is displayed with labels in Russian and, believe it or not, a kind of English. I'm traveling alone, and it's an easy and comfortable place to eat for nothing. My standard meal: one of many salads, one of several kinds of stew, dessert, and beverage. Main dishes range from fish to meat to rice and other grains. The total cost for my three-"course" dinner: 160 rubles, or about US$2.50. Tables are plentiful. It's OK to sit at a large table as a single person, or at a small table with a party of 4. There seem to be no rules. Cash only. Is the food good? Well, it's a fill-up and decent if rather bland. The key word for me: It's easy. And fast.
