The room was quite big, but there was no AC in it. So it was too hot to sleep at night.
The location of the hotel is quite good - it is situated between railway station and lakeside walk. 15 minutes to each. Also, opposit of the hotel there is a perfect restaurant Karelskaya Gornica with many local specialties, including bear meat.

The only advantages were that we booked the hotel easily via internet + a good destination. That's all. Rooms are so soviet (considered to be after the renovation)! Breakfasts were also soviet with a try to be modern... but we could see the sad waiters' eyes full of boredom. The ground floor is totally smoked.
Actually the difference in price with expensive hotels was about $40-60, so next time I guess it's better to book another place.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor are after renovation, but at the right side it's a smoking area, so ju...

Pros:
- Walk-in price, around USD 50.
- Lots of restuarants nearby.
- 10 mins walk from train station, 30 mins walk from pier.

Cons:
- No free Wi-fi, paid RUB250 (or RUB150, i forgot) for a Wi-fi card, the signal was weak and slow. Paying for coffee and enjoying quick wifi in opposite cafe would be better.
- Extra charge for luggage left.
- My room got no curtain.
- The hot drinking water in common area of all 3 floors were used out.. my cup noodles breakfast..

this place belongs to the most international hotel in Petrozavodsk. Many agencies send their tourists there. The terrace looks really comfortable, but the beer is not cold and the food is not good so don't go there. You can get much better in Petrozavodsk.

We stayed at Severnaya Hotel for two nights during our trip to Karelia. Initially I was expecting a typically old and Soviet era hotel with faded wall papers and well used and unrenovated room. I will get to that in a moment.

It is a Soviet-era hotel indeed, but not a bad one. There's plenty of parking spaces on the side of the hotel, so if you have a car, there shouldn't be finding a spot for your car. Check in was smooth, and the receptionists can speak English, so even if your Russian isn't good or don't speak anything at all, you shouldn't have a problem.

We booked a double room and we actually got a double (or maybe slightly larger) bed, and not two single beds put together. Walls looked new and carpets were without stains. Our room may have been one of the recently renovated rooms. Either way, room was better than I expected. There's a info booklet in the room that has info on restaurants and other services in and out of hotel, and they are in Russian and English. Quite informative and useful we thought. It was very well heated even though it was still third week of September, and it was a very welcoming touch considering how cold it was outside.

One problem was the shower cubicle. Bathroom was of adequate size, but shower cubicle consists of just curtains and water drains straight into drainage onto the bathroom floor. After taking a shower, there was a lot of splash and puddle on the bathroom floor. So it would've been nice if they had a proper cubicle (Norwegian hotels had the same shower...can't get used to that). Other than that, it's all fine.

One interesting thing is that before you check out, you find the housekeeper to get your room checked and get a signature on your room card to make sure nothing is broken or missing. You take the card to the reception, and check out is done.

One more thing...We didn't try the hotel restaurant, but had quick breakfast at the hotel cafe. It was empty when we went, so service was quick and efficient (waitress was very brisk as well). We had omlets and tea. Omlets were made from just egg white. My girlfriend told me that's the staple of old Soviet style omlet making. I don't know what happened to the yolk. It wasn't that good. Probably it'd been fine if yolk was there. We didn't try other things, so I don't know what kind of other interesting menu they have.

Overall, not a bad choice considering the fact it was a decently priced hotel in the middle of the downtown. No shortage of restaurants and shops along the street so there shouldn't be any problem for your travel needs.

  • Liked — Good location, not too expensive, and clean room
  • Disliked — Shower cubicle or lack of
