Yurievskoye Podvorie
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We stayed here only one night as part of a tour, our room was ok, very basic, except there was no window, only a roof window which is as much use as a ashtray on a motorbike, and it leaked in the rain as well. Tried to get some extra towels to clean up the mess, but no one spoke English and even showing staff the mess nobody seemed interested in helping. As you are in the middle of nowhere there isn't much to do around the hotel, there is a Monastery but was locked and a traditional wooden house museum across the road but that takes 10 minutes to see everything there. Breakfast was no highlight either.

Spent 1 night in hotel as part of On The Go tour of Russia. Lovely comfortable rooms, and good breakfast. Located 3-4 km out of town; we had minibus provided, so don't know about public transport. Would have been nice to spend longer here, but rest of Russia beckoned. Located by an outdoor Wood Museum Novgorod has a lovely centre, with own Kremlin. There is an ice-skating rink in town, which we used, but not many cafes.

Many years ago, being on an excursion to Velikii Novogorod we had a 'getaway' from the group to see an open-air museum of the Russian traditional wooden architecture. It was the end of September at the sunset so the place, quaint wooden buildings and churches in a kind of forest, seemed like a piece from a fairy-tale, but as we were pressed for time (just half an hour or so before the closing time), I promised myself to come back again to explore it. And when together with my daughter we made up our minds to visit the same ancient town in summer, I tried to find something close to this "Vitoslavlitsy" museum and Yuriev Monastery that was founded by Great Prince Yaroslav Mudry (the Wise) and boasts a cathedral as old as the 12th century.
And among quite a few Novhorod hotels, I spotted this wooden 'terem' (old Russian for mansion or palace), on the outskirts of the town and immediately opposite the wooden architecture museum. Needless to say, I booked a room at once. And we didn't regret our choice.
However, our first room was not a lucky choice, it was rather small with a low ceiling with a window on it. You can't close the window,as it may be too stuffy, but in the event of rain, your beds (right under the window) get wet. But when we requested another room, we were promptly given one without extra payment. It was small but quite cosy, and had everything we needed.
The hotel staff appeared to be extremely helpful and professional: when we arrived early in the morning, long before the check-in hour, the receptionist let us sit in another room and offered us some tea and cookies to relax after the train journey and we got in the room in about an hour after the arrival. They will also provide you with a special fumigator-device, to kill mosquitoes in the room and tea bags absolutely free (hot water can be taken from the water dispenser in the hall). If you travel with children they can organise some traditional handicraft classes for you, and they are ready to help in any possible situation. They are also good at English.
The restaurant staff didn't seem to be that good, and breakfast could have been more varied, although the food 'ala carte' is super, though not so cheap. Try cowberry cakes - it's a speciality, but order them before lunch, in the evening all of them will definetely be eaten up by numerous foreign tourists coming there in coaches for a meal before of after visiting the 'VItoslavlitsy'.
This place is especially convenient for those who travel between Moscow and St.Pete in a car and want to have a short but unforgettable stopover in this beautiful ancient Russian town of Velikii Novgorod, a Hanza member.

Room Tip: Suite are more expensive, but good for a family of three or four.

I liked that this place was in the woods and next to beautiful landscapes and scenery. Also some great sights to go check out.
The place had a great look to it - an old hunting lodge almost.
My complaints were that they falesly advertised a few things... I needed to get laundry done desperately. And I was simply told no. I even pointed out in the brochure that they offered it. No. No reason or explanation.
I then asked if I could use the Russian Bath that was advertised on their websites and brochures. Again I was told no - they didn't have one. I was baffled by that.
Great breakfast included and the food was delicious. Although the people that work the restaurant could have been a bit nicer. They seemed really annoyed that I was ordering food.

This was probably my favourite hotel in Russia because it had a bit of character. It's a giant log cabin and the interior has the wooden beams showing. The rooms were clean and comfortable - and nice and warm! It also has a lovely little banya (Russian sauna) on site. The dinner that we had here was delicious (kebabs, salad, juice and vodka) and the breakfast, while sparse, was also tasty with a decent selection. The staff were friendly and there was free Wi-fi available. While it's a bit out of town it's directly across from the very interesting Museum of Wooden Architecture.

We had an excellent 1 night stay at this hotel. I't a bit out of town, but just across the road from the museum of wooden architecture, which was very interesting.
The hotel rooms were comfortable, very clean and looked brand new. There was a very cosy lounge area, nice sauna, and we loved the wooden log cabin style.
The staff were very friendly and the food was great.
Overall highly recommended.

The venue might be called a resort I guess since it's not just a hotel but set of rooms, restaurant, sauna, beautiful territory around & some facilities.
The surrounding area is superbly looking natural combination of lakes, forest, meadows & old monastery (just 5min by feet). The resort is quiet, newly (2008) built wood structure having nice quality food in its restaurant, good choice in the bar, comfy enough rooms & helpful staff.
There are 2 minor shortcomings:
- some (or all?) rooms are not air conditionned so night will be tough if you stay there in hot summer period,
- if you don't bring your own fumigator you'll be eaten alive by lots of mosquitos (window nets don't help).
