Hotel Complex Petropavlovsk
Reviewed August 5, 2014

The hotel is not very well located, so you need taxis to move around.
It is competently run, all the basics are there, good free WiFi, basic clean rooms, helpful staff, reasonable cafe on the first floor, but a terribly run restaurant in the basement.
The Breakfast is a pretty sorry affair, and no chance to order anything other than coffee, -no eggs!! Just an institutional powdered omelet cut into cake sized pieces, and the usual bread slices with one type of cheese and one type of salami as well as cucumbers/tomatoes.

Room Tip: Stay away from the right side of the hotel, as there are serious ventilators rattling on during the...

It wasn't my intention to spend a night in Petropavlovsk but, here I was...

Check in was smooth. The elevator was a scream...you weren't sure if it would make it to the floor you wanted. The room was small and clean. I also thought the shower was cool too. And that is how I found the hotel. It was all part of the adventure.

There is a pleasant bar downstairs that has a nice menu. Enjoy an icy cold bottle of vodka and a nice meal.

If there was one disappointment was the inability to buy a souvenir from the lobby store. No one wanted to be in charge.

We planned a short trip to Kamchatka in May 2013 and hotel choice was not clear. Based on reviews we read in TripAdvisor we decided to stay at the Petropavlovsk Hotel. It is a very basic hotel, located far from the center (but not as far as others). Essentially everything is far in Patropavlovsk-Kamchatsky as the city is not big but very long. You need to take a taxi to go everywhere. In May we have like 1-2 meters snow in the surroundings so walking to the hotel from the bus was not easy (if you do so, look for the San Marino restaurant and then cross the small hill to get to the back side of the hotel). Front desk and bar personnel were gentle and quick (in Russian terms). The room was small and clean, an old soviet room with some nice views. Toiletries were very basic. An old lift led you to the rooms, where a secondary lobby per floor is located (and a small library). We had breakfast in the bar, really good food with views to the Avachinsky volcano. Price was somewhat acceptable, at European level, but too much for the value offered. Local souvenirs are available at the lobby and parking on the front façade is available. The hotel needs a renovation, so if you go like us, without high expectations, just to sleep, be warm and continue the adventure in Kamchatka it will do right. Just an additional piece of advise: if you want snow in Kamchatka you can go in May, but do not expect visiting the volcanoes or the geysers, as helicopter flights usually start in June (rarely in May); for these visits, travel in August.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy is very remote, so anyone who expects big city facilities has come to the wrong place. We stayed at the Hotel Complex Petropavlovsk for two nights in December 2013 and found it basic, but clean and comfortable. Our room on the 4th floor included a refrigerator but no tea making facilities. A hair dryer is available on request and we found the WiFi satisfactory. Toiletries were very basic. I would advise guests to bring your own shampoo. Meals are served in the bar on the ground floor, with breakfast included in the tariff. The food was hearty. There is an ATM in the lobby, and a smoking lounge on the 5th floor. After a ten hour overnight flight from Moscow we were glad that we had arranged a car to meet us. There may be taxis in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, but we did not see any at the airport. The 2000 roubles was well worth it for the 70km trip. (Tip: make sure you retain the luggage checks with your boarding pass. Security at the airport is very tight. And make sure you dress warmly in Winter. You have to wait outside while the plane is unloaded.) Staff at the hotel were pleasant and mostly spoke some English. Marina at the Tour Desk was particularly helpful and arranged a tour for us. Heavy snowfall in the week previous to our arrival had prevented access to the volcanoes, but the sun was shining and we got plenty of good photos from vantage points in the city, visited the souvenir shop for some very good carved woodwork and finished the day at a Paratunka recreation area for a soak in the thermal spring water. With outside temperatures down to minus 18c, this was very welcome.

A typical old soviet hotel. But with absolutely inadequate prices.

Have no idea what hotels rooms are on the official photos. Perhaps superior.
We stayed in a double room for 5800 rub. (about 200 USD). And it was far from the promotional pictures.

Terrible bathroom with very old and ugly bathroom fixtures and a smell of dampness.
A door with finger-size gaps between the door and the wall (so no soundproof).
Poor room decoration and equipment.
Location - very far from the city center, from the sea. No views or nice surroundings.

Would not be so disappointed if not the price of it.
We spent next night in the Geizer hotel for a twice cheaper price and got just the same!

Few good things about this hotel: cleanliness and a good diverse breakfast (with instant coffee though).

I wonder why here it is called "Best Eastern..". It is just the same hotel as another one here "Hotel complex Petropavlovsk".

P.S.
Also just 2 minutes walk from the hotel there is a nice restaurant "San-Marino". With european-style decoration, nice cuisine and wide range of cakes (but not a cheap one).

I arrived in Kamchatka at the same time as Qwelt (previous reviewer), and to qualify his comment about the lack of water in the hotel, it was a city-wide issue arising from annual maintenance work in Petropavlovsk. Also, the larger of the hotel's two lifts was not working on 3 Aug but, like the water, was back in action when we returned a week later.

The hotel seems to be located on the edge of the main metropolis (it's not a large city, but is spread out), and is about a 20 min walk from the fish market. My expectations were not high and the two rooms I used were smallish and not luxurious (it's a 3* hotel), but were clean, functional and comfortable...except for the 5am weekend firecrackers (not the hotel's fault). For the first stay I had a room on 5th floor, which was better than the one I had on the 3rd floor during my second stay. The shower in the 3rd floor room left the bathroom floor permanently wet, which was a little disconcerting on arrival. This was not helped by the room not being serviced during my stay, but fresh towels were provide when I reported the apparent oversight.

There are two restaurants - we used only one - where the breakfasts were satisfactory, and typical of my experience of Russian hotels, including the delicious cross between scrambled egg and omelette that you can slice, assorted capsicum, tomato, hot and cold sausage, black bread, cheese, yoghurt, tea, instant coffee, juices). Set lunches and/or dinners were included in the cost of the tour, so if you're a vegetarian or have other dietary needs you'd better forewarn the hotel and tour operator, and then confirm your requirements again before your arrival.

There's free wifi in the lobby and in the rooms, but signal stability can be an issue. Still, this is significantly better than the 4* Bel Kam Tour in Paratunka (see Qwelt's review) which charges RUB100/hr!

Room Tip: If you have the chance, ask for a 5th floor room. I'm not sure if these are meant to be superior...

We ( me and my wife) stayed at this hotel for 3 nights ( on 3/8/2013 and again for 2 nights on 8/8/2013 and 9th) as this was the assigned hotel by out Tour Company " The Lost World Tours) and not by our choice. We were picked up from the airport and from this hotel, the tour company picked us for most of our tours and therefore, did not realize the location of this hotel within Petropvlovsk city. This hotel is built on a Soviet styled concrete building and is as old as Soviet times with the rooms and baths looking ancient! When we reached the hotel on 3rd August, we were told that there was no water supply and the tour company took us to some Dacha ( about 20 kms away) to take shower and freshen up. The whole night was spent on thinking how to effectively use the toilet and live in the same room with out water supply!

The room was very average and the bath tub or the shower area was one staright out of WW2 times. When we returned again on 8th, the water supply was restored and we had a decent sleep not worrying about the toilets and water supply. The food was average and the service was swift and efficient manned by only 2 staff. We used the free internet provided by the hotel in their Business Lounge which was quite useful. The Reception staff could speak some English and was friendly.

As it was not our choice, we had to manage whatever was available and not available.

Room Tip: may be the ones facing the streets!
