Ok, there is not a whole lot of choices available in PK, but this hotel charged USD 230 per night, an insane amount for the product offered:
small rooms, with even smaller beds, a toilet that does not stop running, an elevator that gives the impression of giving up forever any time soon etc.
The hotel is now renamed to: Hotel Petropavlovsk-Kamchatkiy, they apparently noticed that "best eastern" simply was too much...
The pictures of the hotel must have either been taken in 1990 or photo-shopped. The general structure is the same, but there are no white walls left on the outside....

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view of the volcanoes.

Because of waiting in Petropavlovsk for a weakly flight to Magadan I stayed totally 9 days in this hotel, certainly much longer than an average tourist who spends there maximum 3 nights (arrival to Kamchatka, a day between trips and the night before departure). Therefore, I had enough time to learn to know the hotel, its amenities and surroundings. The hotel, considered as the best in the Kamchatka's capital, has a good location on the wide street Prospekt Pobedy ("Victory Boulevard"), close to business and cultural centers. You can walk to a small post office, a local open market and to the large, modern department store Shamsa. A new church was built very close to the hotel.
The five-floor hotel started its operation in 1988. It has a restaurant in Gzhel style (typical Russian china ware), a coffee shop, a complete business center with a very friendly, fluently English speaking female manager, a perfectly working laundry, fitness center, room service and a travel agency. All reception girls speak good English. The comfortable rooms have a king-size bed, refrigerator, complete bathroom, coffee/tea maker, phone and TV-set. The prices (in 2011) are USD 355 for an executive suite and USD 170 for a twin "Econom" room. Except the harsh winter months, the hotel rooms occupancy is almost 100% (!) During clear sky, from the rooms on the north and east side of the hotel you can see a beautiful panorama of the snow covered volcanoes Avachinski and Koryaksky. Unfortunately, the sky in Petropavlovsk, also in summer, is mostly cloudy and it is frequently raining all days. Although there is central heating in the rooms, it is not in operation in summer although the outside temperature during my stay in the hotel was only about 10 C(!) The best experience in the hotel was the breakfast buffet and the very delicious meals in the coffee shop. The restaurant was practically always occupied by bankets as well as wedding and birthday celebrations.

Room Tip: When reserving , ask a room on the northern or eastern side of the hotel

Supposedly this is the best place in town. During our recent visit, we were booted because Putin was in town and was supposed to stay at the property. It isn't anything special but it is certainly comfortable enough to provide a nice break from camping.

Best things about the property:

- warm showers
- good food at the in-house bar / restaurant
- wireless internet access (for a fee)
- good business center and travel agency

Rooms are very basic. Beds are a bit short and there is no ability to control temperature. I strongly recommend double checking your reservation before arrival. The hotel fills up and during both of our stays there was a mistake with the reservation and there weren't enough rooms for our party. You may also want to bring a pair of ear plugs. Russian guests can get pretty loud at night so you will need them here (and elsewhere during your visit to the area).

This is not a pleasant hotel but it provides a necessary service bridging the gap between arriving in Kamchatka and getting out into the pristine and stunning wilderness. The hotel has throw backs to the days before the wall collapsed with attendants on every floor, shaky lifts & stunning decor. On the plus side, the hotel restaurant provides adequate food and there's always plenty of "wildlife" to be watched coming & going. All joking apart, I think this probably is the best hotel in PKC & you'll forget it the second you get out of the city and into the real business of coming to Kamchatka - the incredible, pure and elemental nature.
