I travel for work on assignment and spend significant time at each location. It's prudent to rent an apartment rather than live out of a hotel. I was lucky enough to find a flat in the Taganka area of Moscow. To avoid going stir crazy, I always try to find a place to unwind on the weekends and occasional weeknights. Coming from New York, I'm not interested in the impersonal mega-clubs. I prefer places where I can experience the flavor of the local people. I recently hit the jackpot. I've specifically joined TripAdvisor to spread the Gospel of Stoy! Ka on Taganka.
Located at Taganskaya Square, no more than 150 feet (45 Meters) from the Taganskaya metro stop, it is very convenient to get to. Also, there are taxi's both outside of the metro and outside of the club should you choose to leave while the metro is shut down. The cub itself is in the basement requiring one to descend a set of stairs. However, the ceilings are quite high and I've never felt constricted or stifled there. The walls are white painted brick-face. Lights of shifting colors are projected onto the walls giving them a multi-hued look. The decor is comfortable with seating being mostly in leather covered booths.
The food is excellent and the staff extremely attentive and well trained. You need not exert effort trying to attract their attention. As soon as you look in their general direction they appear by your side ready to serve. Everything I have tried at Stoy! Ka, is very good to delicious. In all honesty, I am not a big fan of the food in Moscow. So I was very surprised when served food there the first time. I now go to Stoy! Ka on a regular basis and I haven't been disappointed since.
The prices for both food and drink are very reasonable by any standard. By Moscow standards, the prices are downright cheap. On a typical night, I'll have three to four Rum and Cokes, an entree and a large fruit platter to pick on during the evening. The bill usually comes to $40.00.
On Friday and Saturday nights there is a cover charge of 300 rubles for men and 200 rubles for women at the door. Reservations should be made as tables do run out. The crowd usually numbers from 100 to 120 people and the ages range from low 20's to mid 40's. The breakdown is 60 percent women to 40 percent men.
And now for the best part. The crowd is awesome. Extremely warm and approachable. I used to show up alone and not once have I sat all evening by myself. I am friendly and open, but cautious about making the first approach. I can say that these wonderful people hate to see someone sitting by themselves. Almost invariable someone will strike up a conversation or a women will smile warmly beckoning me to the dance floor. The music is lively with a pleasant mix of American, international and Russian tunes.
Safety is not a concern. There's plenty of security stationed around the club, though there hardly seems to a need for them. In the 20 or so times that I have, now, been to Stoy! Ka, there has never been a fight or any kind of trouble.
There is a regular crowd that I have started to recognize and that I am at this point, happily becoming a part of. I speak Russian fluently so the language barrier is not a concern for me and I cannot really comment on how a non Russian speaker would fare at Stoy! Ka. I can say that the other night I wound up sharing the table with a Canadian, a Turk, a Russian man and several Russian ladies, smoking a Hookah. There were absolutely no problems with communication as everyone spoke at least some English.
If it sounds like I'm gushing about this place, well, it's because I am. If you are ever in Moscow and looking for place to unwind, eat, dance and socialize, then I can confidently recommend Stoy! Ka.
