Though I was a little put off by all the military presence outside and the lack of other people walking around on a Tuesday morning, I ended up enjoying this place. The staff speak NO English so don't plan on asking any questions and a lot of the first floor you visit is English-free (or no English at all). BUT most of the displays upstairs have English descriptions and it's still neat to be able to watch some of the videos (though in Russian) to see WWII through the Russian p.o.v. which is definitely something new for me. Some of the images on the wall from the labour camps are horrifyingly heartbreaking and though I think that they've overdone some things here, it was overall interesting and I was glad I had visited! It's HUGE.

Well set out and interesting museum. When we were there they were having an army parade and commemoration, the band and display were very colourful.

Victory Park, and the 141m Victory Monument erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ending of the Great Patriotic War - victory over Nazi Germany, - is a chilling yet worthy tribute to the millions of Russians who lost their lives during WW2. We first visited the square at nighttime when it was full of people and security forces during a pop concert celebrating Moscow's 865th anniversary. It was a bustling place, enhanced by lights and fireworks. When we returned a couple of days later, the square was totally empty - deserted! It would be impressive to watch a Remembrance parade here, and to have an opportunity to visit the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. What also struck us is that an Orthodox Church, a synagogue and a mosque are situated around the square/park.

A magnificent memorial on Poklonnaya Gora has been built to commemorate the Victory. Many veterans take part in the military parade and lay wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A lot of guests from different countries of the . world come to Moscow to participate in the celebrations.
