“A Touch of Class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

The Hotel Baltschug is the place you want to stay is you are looking for old style charm and elegance in a city that is has lost its much of its old world mystic. From the views looking onto St Basil's and Red Square, to the magnificiently appointed rooms this hotel lives up to the Kempinski reputation.

Pure luxury with the views to Red Square. Spotlessly clean with great amenities. Well appointed rooms and great breakfast. My visit was a few years ago and I am glad to read from other reviews that the staff improved since (don't get me wrong, I did not have any particular complaints). Highly recommendable.

Arriving late and seeing St Basil's lit up against the night sky as we exited the taxi set the tone for a great stay!
The staff were brilliant from the start, they could not do enough for us. Our room was excellent, clean, well appointed and big, with a breath taking view of the Kremlin.
Brilliant central location, could walk almost everywhere.
The spa facilities were of the highest standard ... and empty whenever we went!

I had been there once before, seven years ago - at that time, it was a very nice place, but the service level was very unstable. This time, everything was top notch. Spacious and well-appointed room, excellent food both in the restaurant and the lobby, and especially attentive, friendly, helpful, professional service throughout. Highly recommended for a good place in central Moscow.

We stayed here in January, towards the tail end of the Russian Christmas break.
The staff were very attentive, and we were taken to our hotel room by the receptionist who had booked us in.The room was on the 7th floor, and was spotlessly clean, and very comfortable.
The location of the hotel was fantastic, just a walk across the bridge and you were outside St.Basils cathedral, red square, and all the other main tourist attractions.
The hotel restaurant was excellent, service amazing and a great choice of food.
The staff were very accommodating, and were very happy to chat if you asked a question.
We used the hotel pool everyday, which was lovely, and the jacuzzi very welcome after a long day visiting the tourist sites.
The hotel also allowed us to keep our room on until 3pm for free as opposed to the usual check out time of 12, all we had to do was ask.
I don't know what the hotel would be like at busier times of the year, but for our trip, it was perfect.

I stayed at the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow twice in the last 10 days (March 2014); each time for three nights.

For the first stay, I had a room on the seventh floor (737) with a lovely view of some of the Red Square sites. The room was comfortable, spacious, and well-appointed. They tend to keep the rooms warm and the thermostats didn't seem to work; so having a window that would open for a breeze was a plus. If you walk on the Moscow streets, your shoes will get beat up and so their free shoe shining service is a very nice addition. The desk staff are friendly and efficient. The lobby is very smoky which can be disconcerting to many western travelers, but I understand that Moscow is going smoke free in June 2014.

*However*, the second visit was not so nice. I had a room on the fourth floor (439) facing the interior which serves as a (noisy) dinner/meeting place and smoking.hangout corner for hotel staff. As you will see from my uploaded image, the handles were broken off the window so I couldn't get any fresh air into the room. On the first day, brownish water came out of the shower/bath. But this didn't happen on the subsequent two days. I also made the mistake of going to the hotel restaurant on the second stay. This is a bit of a shock. The food is good, but $20 for a bowl of Borscht and $80 for a glass of wine? You can see the menu on hotel's website. I don't think one could get out of there for less than $250 for a moderately sized meal and small beverage.

All Moscow hotels are expensive, I've stayed at another lovely one which was slightly more expensive on the other side of red square across from the Kremlin: The Hotel N-------, I would stay there again next time. The Hotel N******* is more quirky and charming.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the upper floor facing the square.
