We were in the queue for the English tour at door 12 at 0930hr. Counting the number of people in front, we were closed to being the 15th person in the group. The website stated that they only took the first 15 people for the tour but we pressed on. Only at 1100hr, the staff came out to put on bands on the people. They were generous and took in at least 20. We got in! It was like striking lottery! Definitely a worthwhile quest because the tour was informative and lovely. We were blessed with a 10-15 min view of a full-dressed rehearsal of Raymonda. We emerged beaming from ear to ear. It's a day we would never forget!
could not go as Gisele ballet was fully booked. Eventually the concierge found me two seats but too expensive (307 € per person)
I booked within a week of the performance through a site I found mentioned on the Forum. if you keep checking the site tickets come on & off all the time which was great for us. Once you register on the site you can keep checking & then make payment via the site too. I printed out our tickets & we presented them at the door - no problem.
We saw the choreographers choice ballet on the Historic Stage which was superb from a box- the dances were so well trained & the performance was amazing. The building is spectacular & it is definitely worth getting there early to look around. You can also have a pre performance drink in the bar which I found to be rather lacking in atmosphere & not worth it.
The only problem I had was that the box seats are very cramped - I think they put too many chairs in the boxes & it is not very comfortable sitting right on top of someone else with very little leg room. The view can also be a bit restricted - but as far as I can remember when you are selecting you seats you can check the visibility of your specific seat which is definitely recommended.
All in all it is definitely well worth going to see any performance there.
I was looking for tickets for July already in March and all was sold out. There were some people selling tickets outside but I somehow don't trust these people. However the building is magnificent and it has a lovely garden with fountain right outside. It is in a close proximity of all main sightseeings so it's easily accessible by walk even from the Red Square. Don't miss it even if you didn't get ticket. The building is worth just looking at it :)
Try to get there early so you have time to take in the beauty of the building. Then you will be knocked out by the outstanding performance whether an opera or ballet.
Bolshoi is a beautiful theatre (although the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg is more beautiful). We saw the Don Carlos OPERA HERE and although it was a quite good performance, we were most disappointed that there were no english subtitles. Yet the week before we went to Tsychaikovsky's Mazepo opera at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg and it was an absolutely superb production, magnificent costumes, and english subtitles.
