Back in Soviet days, women stood in line for hours to buy whatever this store had on the shelves (whether they needed it or not). If they did not need it, they resold it or bartered it for something else. For decades, this place was virtually empty of consumer goods. Now, it is a mecca of designer clothing. Who shops here? The notorious oligarchy? I certainly did not. However, I got a delicious ice cream cone and used the bathroom....I highly recommend it for this purpose. Plus, it is an important piece of history and architecture.

GUM is a fascinating piece of Moscow history which leaves you with a real feel for how it used to be in the day. Beautifully presented and restored -a must see in Moscow.

This is a place you should and probably you would visit in Moscow. Not a shopping mall just in the heart of the city but also a great architecture which represents Russian history. GUM is not building which you can confuse with other malls. When walking in it you can feel the past. You can find high end brands if you're looking for them. But it's also like a monument belongs to Russia. If you come from a developed country you may find those brands in your own but the thing you can not find the very special experience.

They term it the GUM Department Store but in reality it is a multi-story shopping complex catering for a wide variety of tastes and styles from high end fashion, both female and male to interesting food outlets.
The day we were there it had been raining and to just sit in comfort with a hot coffee and a blini made for a pleasant interlude as we looked down the length of the complex. We were surprised by the variety of food stuffs offered and we did consider that conditions in Moscow had certainly changed from the time of the Soviet Rule.
If you get the chance do not miss it, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We were delighted to visit this department store.
We all enjoyed lunch on the upper floor from the various vendors offering their savoury and sweet items. We then looked at the various little boutiques that make up the several floors of this store.
From the looks of the people visiting this store you need money to shop here, the goods in the stores reflected this
