Owner description: Once used for coronations, this Cathedral Square church is notable for its five golden domes and numerous windows, and contains the wooden coronation throne built for Ivan the Terrible.

Cathedral is very nice. Funny how you always have to crowd through one small door. We visited on Saturday morning and that is the day of the week that there is a ceremonial performance, with a marching band, which was quite impressive to see.

You might not know that churches in Russia require that everyone stand - only the very few royal families could be seated.

The walls are richly decorated with tapestries and 'carpets' or wall-coverings. Tables with rich ornamentation of jugs, plates, chalices and the like are dotted round the walls.

The thinking behind thais form of worship, according to the historians, is that the congregation would feel as though they were in the "…womb of the Church…" and that they could rely on the security and safety of the clergy!

Services are free to visit and partake, but very different than a typical western church service.

This particular church, as inferred was dedicated to coronations of the Russian royalty.

We visited as part of a visit to the Kremlin and gardens. The church is beautiful, with murals from floor to ceiling. The doors around the church and courtyard are impressive in size and artwork.

We were able to enter the cathedral and enjoyed the walls that covered with art. They do not allow picture taking.
One interesting thing about Russian orthodox churches. they don't have any seats, the royal family sat but any other guest stood.
