Some of it was still under renovation, but most was already accessible. Maintained well looks great. Absolutely must go for tourist/visitor. Check Tzar-Cannon, Tzar-Bell, Diamond Fund, Armory Chamber. During holidays they often have orchestras, military parades, "Gussar" (Russian horseman) patrols.

a really interesting day definately buy the guide book as it is really the only way to make sense of all the little churches it is quie expensive if you want to do the diamonds tour and the armoury but that is true of all moscow.

I grew up with a completely different idea of the Kremlin. It's not the "White House" of Russia it's basicly a fort that now houses many government buildings and churches that were attended by the czars. The architecture is unique with the top of the surrounding wall mimiced in the links of the chain used to line the sidewalks. The treasury museum within the walls of the Kremlin is a must.

It takes being there to realize the Kremlin is itself a walled city. Inside the citadel is Lenin's office, government buildings, beautiful churches and manicured grounds and walkways, If you are a history buff, you won't be able to stop from wondering who walked on those grounds, you can even imagine Reagan and Gorbachev walking together in private before they walked out onto Red Square. The guided tours of the churches and museums give you a good background into Russian czarist and Soviet history. You can't leave Moscow without taking the tour of the Kremlin, and then stepping out for a meal just outside its gates at one of the largest McDonalds in the world, Ahh the irony of it all.

Churches wonderful, especially when the all male choir was singing (and selling their CDs). Armory was splendid-- such treasures and history! Paid a bit extra to see the diamonds and other jewels set aside off the usual route, well worth it. Wish I had the cash to see the ancient rooms, but it was the cost of airfare to Moscow! Still, those were the original Kremlin palaces and if you can arrange it, do so. Guide pointed out the rooms Putin occupies, and also explained the different types of dome tops, as not all are "onions." Would return again.
