another great experience, plenty of history to see, our English speaking guide was very knowledgeable but seemed in a hurry. well worth the tour. be prepared to line up, for tickets, different line for security. and in summer apparently its a lot worse than winter.

I took my 15 years old son to Moscow last year. He is a huge history buff. As far as history goes Moscow is amazing. There's not much else beside museums and historical sites to see and do there, but the history IS amazing. We used the Moscow free tour and loved it. The first tour was free, but it was so good that we did 2 more, they were very fun and informative. We stayed at a rented apartment about 3 blocks away from the subway. The people in Moscow show little emotion, have a large number of alcoholics, and high suicide rates, but we tried to not let that drag us down on our adventures, and most of the people we met were very pleasant.

The ticket was a bit confusing as you needed separate tickets for different areas. Normal one usually covered entrance, church square (all the churches), and garden area. You would need another one for Peter's Bell Tower, inside which there were a series of history introduction of Moscow as climbing up. I would recommend go to the tower first if you don't have a guide. Because the introduction covered the brief history of the church square as well. On the top, I had a nice view of the city. There was another ticket for armoury. The great Kremlin palace was not allowed to enter as it was the residence of the president. One'd better know some simple Russian because the receptionist at ticket office didn't speak English (or she preferred not to), which was to my surprise. There seemed to be a time schedule for each visit of armoury but as I said, I couldn't understand what the receptionist was talking. There were simple leaflets inside every church with brief introduction of the church and map of the paintings on the wall.

Everything is good except soviet style ticketing. Plenty to see. Best take a tour or bring your own tour book

A great visit, took about three hours to see it all! I advise getting tickets in advance so you don't have to wait in line!
