Owner description: Red Square is a city square in Moscow, Russia. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant: Nearby to the South is the elaborate brightly domed Saint Basil's Cathedral and the palaces and cathedrals of the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum. On the Eastern side of the square is the GUM department store, and next to it the restored Kazan Cathedral.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia is a must see during the day particularly in the late afternoon when the light for photographing peaks. Before you enter, see the many costumed and cartoon characters ready for photos and tourists. You will also see a statue of Marshall Zhukov, the heroic Russian commander from WWII before you enter. Directly ahead is Resurrection Gate and yonder is Red Square. If you can, enter Red Square through Resurrection gate to get a real historic experience. Directly ahead is St. Basil's Cathedral (erected in the 16th Century) with it's multicolored onion domes. You will need to get much closer to get a good photo of St. Basil's. To the center right of the square is Lenin's tomb with it's modern dark marble building that had limited viewing times (and no body when I visited in July 2013 as it was being readied for burial soon). Even without a body the lines and waits were long to get inside (I did not go inside). The Gum department store, which is really an upscale mall of Western European and American brand names. Gum offers clean free toilets, always a welcome relief for tourists and a respite from the heat of Moscow (I visited during July 2013 when they had a heat wave with temperatures in the 80's and high humidity). Directly behind you (through which Resurrection Gate was entered) is the State museum. It had housed czars in days gone by. What most surprised me was the two churchs in Red Square - St. Basil's Cathedral and another smaller church. The small church was holding a service when I visited late afternoon. Although the site is magical during the day, it has an entirely surreal presence when you take the Moscow by Night tour. Red Square was one of a few stops we made with the Moscow by Night tour. Gum was now illuminated like it was Christmas. Other buildings were lit with flood lamps which made the entire scene beautiful. You must see this site both during the day and at night to really appreciate it.

Red squares huge, very good architecture. Could imagine the parades and marching of the Russian army throu the red square. Complete with St Basil's cathedral at the the end of the red square

From the time you enter Red Square, you get the flavor of fine architecture & mind blowing layout. This place resembles the strength & intelligence of USSR. If you go to Moscow, make sure you visit the place at least once.

Red Square was full of flowers when I visited and, of course, we got the shot with St Basil's. I also had a wander through GUM but this is just full of all the international high end brands so nothing very exciting. One probably needs to buy postcards and other souvenirs round here as once you go further away from the centre, it is hard to find this type of stuff.

Just a must see when in Moscow, found out lots of information that I was not aware of, so it pays to have a guide.
